The report stems from the author’s participation of an E-C scientific translationproject, mainly focusing on the study of the key technologies of the Mars ScienceLaboratory (MSL) to enhance our comprehensive strength in the field of deep spaceexploration. Based on this standard project, the author lays great emphasis onexploring its cooperation mode and the translation competence developed by the authoras an English major.Considering the two groups of translators characterized by different majors andtheir division of labor and cooperation in promoting the progress of the project, theauthor analyzes the features of their translation respectively and further explores theirhelpful cooperation mode. As translators with engineering background, they tended tograsp the main idea of the text and ignore the details because of their abundance intechnical knowledge. However, they were relatively poor in both Chinese and English, which caused difficulties in comprehending the original text detailedly and plainversion of translation. By comparison, translators from English major were good atanalyzing the English text and could produce a meticulous version of translation oftenwith literary flavor. However, they tended to adopt the method of literal translation dueto their lack of technical knowledge. By contrasting with the earlier period of theproject, the author has made significant progress in translating scientific materials inlater period due to his increasingly accumulated experience, such as broadenedbackground knowledge, enriched and uniformed terminology, optimized translationtools and methods, unified style and norms, etc., through which the overall quality ofthe translation has been improved significantly. Therefore, the translators with different academic backgrounds in this project canmake their respective advantages complementary to each other in terms of translationcooperation; and the individual’s progress and flaws have a certain referencesignificance.
