| The subjective role of translators is of essential importance for the translation results. Currently, the translation of English for water resources (EWR) has become increasingly important. However, EWR translators have not attracted sufficient attention from academic circles, and few researches have been done concerning the subjectivity of these translators. The survey on EWR translators show that they undertake more responsibilities in their work than imagined and their subjective role needs to be established. The German school of functionalism views translation as an intentional, interpersonal, intercultural communicative action where the translator plays an indubitable role. The new eco-translatological theory puts the role of translators in an even more importance place. The functional-ecological translational framework constructed in the thesis provides EWR translators with theoretical supports and creates a platform for them to establish their subjective role.With examples of translating water-resources texts,, EWR translators’relations with such agents as the initiator, ST producer and TT user in translation actions are clearly illustrated in such a framework and their functional perspective toward translation is also developed, specifically reflected in identifying functional translation units, being aware of interpersonal communication, working out the intended TT function and facilitating communication. Meanwhile, EWR translators are encouraged to formulate their translation networks at linguistic, cultural and communicative levels within the above framework to help them conduct translational activities more effectively. The subjective role of EWR translators is also embodied in their grasp of translation procedures in particular translation tasks, which include pre-translation preparations, thorough ST analysis, transference from ST to TT, and check of TT’s communicative function. |
