On Translator’s Subjectivity In Prose Translational Eco-Environment

The translator, the most active subject in translation, plays a paramount role in translating, and how the translator plays his active role concerns not only the quality of the translations but also the survival of translator himself in the translational eco-environment.Based on the theory of "Translation as Adaptation and Selection" put forward by Hu Gengshen, this thesis aims to explore the exertion of translator’s subjectivity in the translational eco-environment by analyzing the examples selected from Zhang Peiji’s prose translations. The main body of this thesis intends to make intensive research as to how a translator can successfully bring his subjectivity into play by adapting and selecting and getting rid of the constraints to gain better survival in the prose translational eco-environment.The findings made by this thesis are as followings:Prose translation is part of literary translation, whose translational eco-environment is more demanding for the survival of a translator. In order to obtain survival permission in the prose translational eco-environment, the translator would make deliberate moves in multidimensional adaptation and selection by exerting his subjectivity. The translator would be bothered by different restrictions from the environment when exerting his subjectivity and the translator’s own personality and ability will determine how far his subjectivity may go, and that might in turn decide the soundness of his translation and ultimately his existence as a good translator. What needs stressing is that diverse translated texts have different requirements for translators’ qualities, and that translators should know how to bring his subjectivity into play in different translational eco-environments to break the bondages and gain survival when having the makings of a translator.
