Translating Chapters Five And Six Of1913: The Cradle Of Modernism: A Report

1913: The Cradle of Modernism centers on the year of1913to illustrate thepresence of modernism. Titled “Global Culture and the Invention of the Other”,Chapter Five mainly presents the global cultural context and how “the Other”(refersto various cultural elements from other continents) are introduced into the works ofthe modernist pioneers when modernism just emerges. With the title “The SplinteredSubject of Modernism”, Chapter Six describes how the “subjects” of creation–mainly writers,“splinter” and finally develop a mature modernist style during theembryonic period of modernism. The two chapters have a number of over30,000words, spanning over46pages.The report consists of three parts. The first part introduces the backgroundinformation of the original work and its author. The second part presents thepreparatory work before translation, followed by the guiding theories for translaiton(respectively are theories related to monograph translation and to coherence), leadingto the conclusion, which elaborates on cases and examples (respectively fromquotations and the body part) to summarize the experience and inadequancies interms of translation. The third part points out the implications for future research,which mainly centers on the tranalation means of literary theoratical monographs.
