A Functionalist Approach To Translator’s Subjectivity In The C-E Translation Of The Government Work Report(2012-2013)

As a kind of new media for diplomatic propaganda,Government Work Report (GWR) becomes more and more important.In order to realize the purpose of the communication and diplomaticpropaganda, the translations of the GWR need to be carefully probedinto. However, the studies of the translation of GWR are often limitedwithin the linguistic field. In addition, as the pivotal between thesource language (SL) and target language (TL), the translator takesvital responsibility. Through the understanding of the backgrounds ofthe ST and master of the basic rules of the translation, translatorshould have more freedom to follow the subjectivity to perform thetranslation. And nowadays, the study of the subjectivity pays lessattention on the essential source of the subjectivity and the category ofthe translator’s subjectivity.These shortcomings or the blank of the studies should be paidmore attention to in the later studies of the translation.This thesis would take the translator’s subjectivity as theobjects of perform the study in light of the functionalism approach.Through qualitative analysis and the detailed analysis offunctionalism and subjectivity, this thesis studies the GWR from2012 to2013on both macro and micro level and find that the functionalismapproach would be a better theory to guide the translation of theGWR and the study of translator’s subjectivity. Through amounts ofcases studies in terms of the translator’s subjectivity perspective, thethesis proves that it exerts strong influences over the translation ofGWR. And the translator’s subjectivity is not the forced rule or anystrain to the translation; it has integrated with the self proficiency ofthe translator to become the backgrounds of the translation. And it hasa function of subtle and unconsciously on the translation performanceof the translators.
