Modern literature is filled with the concepts such as “old and new”,“civilization and ignorance”,“progress and stupidity”. The writerhas given the abstract nature to the characters in different classes, thusmaking them enter the history. And this is the most importantmanifestation of the modern character of modern literature. Ma Shitu beganwriting with the purpose of revolutionary education, his work wasrevolutionary, but what is more important is that he broke the regularway of description such as essentialization and abstraction. Thecharacters and the society show the local characteristics that obscuredin the revolutionary literature. And this is the most significant featurein his works. This paper is based on his saga novel Ten stories at nightas the research object, and tried to analysis the characteristics of hisnovel comparing to the works of the same time.The most significant local writing feature in Ten stories at nightis the writing style that inherited from the literary sketches. The writerwrote the novel for three times, but the text was destroyed for three times.When the writer began to write the novel for the last time, he was nearlyseventy years old. After he experienced the ups and downs in his life,his calm and indifferent attitude is also reflected in his work. Thus,he chose the style of literary sketches. The writing style of literary sketches is skilled in representing the reflections on life, and writeralso chose the local theme that was overlooked in the revolutionaryliterature, such as the squire who controlled the country, the fightsbetween normal people and the description of Sichuan. What is more, MaShitu also integrated the form of “gossip” in the work. And the properlanguage feature of “gossip” and the using of Sichuan dialect made thework more humorous and interesting. In addition, the writer inherited thetraditional culture such as “blank”.In the novel, the writer described a group of heroes with miserablelife——Paoge. Different with the description in revolutionaryliterature, the heroes in Ten stories at night showed the characteristicsof morality and justice which is suppressed in the revolutionaryliterature. The morality and justice was regardless of class, whether forthe internal part, or for the poor people in need of help, even forlandlords and squires.“Morality and justice” became their principlethroughout their lives. And the writer also took the different ideas ofwriting the heroes. Instead of putting them under a common framework ofclass contradictions, Ma Shitu intended to show their secular character,the real and worldly side.The most prominent local writing characteristic in Ten stories atnight is the description of “social arena”. In the revolutionaryliterature, the “social arena” was ignored. But in this work, the tenstories occurred in the countryside or in the city, but without exception,all of the stories were the manifestation of the mighty local society withcountless forces. And the fights between these forces made the everydaylife of the community. People who have forces battled for their owninterests, while the normal people had to attach to the powerful groupsin order to survive. Ma Shitu showed us the true style and feature inSichuan society, and thus completed the construction of the local writing.
