Zang is a polysemy and polyphonic word which means the internal organs hidden in the body. Xiang, refers to the outside manifestation of the physiology and pathology. Traditional Chinese Medicine believes that diagnosis of disease can be made by the outside manifestation of the physiology and pathology of internal organs. Traditional Chinese Medicine practitioners attach great importance to this method through different dynasties.Therefore, visceral manifestation theory is the kernel part of the basic theories of Chinese medicine but because the differences among language barriers, cross-culture and medicine systems, visceral manifestation theory has developed slowly. Thus, it is unfamiliar with the western people. This is one of the obstacles impedes the development of traditional Chinese medicine in the world. The concepts and terms of visceral manifestation theory is the essence of TCM terminology. They represent the basic problems on TCM translation. The discussion on them is conducive to strategies and theory utilized in TCM translation.The TCM translation circle is bounded by the equivalence theory for a long time. The translation of the same terminology is chaotic, westernized seriously. In order to find the solution to these problems of visceral manifestation terminology, the thesis introduces the functionalism skopos theory to the terminology translation on visceral manifestation. Functionalism skopos theory apprears in late70’s20th century. It integrates many disciplines and absorbs from multi sources then forms a significant impact on the translation school. It emphasizes on functionalism and socio-culture factors, focuses on communication and behavioral theory, textual linguistics, and discourse analysis theory and also the reaction theory on literary studies. The author selects representative terms from10English dictionaries of traditional Chinese medicine from1982to2004. Guided by the strategies of skopos rule, coherence rule and fidelity rule, the thesis explores the feasibility of the application of skopos theory on visceral manifestation terminology translation. The selection of existing terms is aiming to standardize the visceral manifestation terminology translation.The results of this study will have to promote the further application of skopos theory on visceral manifestation terminology translation. It will assist the translator to adopt what kind of effective translation strategy on visceral manifestation terminology translation as well. The thesis attempts to contribute to the TCM translation and aiming to arouse the attention of the scholars and professionals both at home and abroad on skopos theory applies in visceral manifestation terminology translation and accelerates the development of traditional Chinese medicine in the world.
