| The translator was entrusted to translate one of The Series of Books: Lecture Notes by Famous Experts of Traditional Chinese Medicine: The Third Part: Zhang Tingmo’s Lecture Notes of the Science of Clinical Chinese Materia Medica(2010)published by People’s Medical Publishing House in Beijing.This whole work was compiled with the classroom records of the course,Science of Clinical Chinese Materia Madica,taught by Zhang Tingmo,a professor of Chengdu University of traditional Chinese medicine.The main content of the book includes basic concepts of traditional Chinese medicine and Chinese materia medica,the history of Chinese materia medica,the efficacy and performance of Chinese medical herbs and influencing factors of Chinese medical herbs in clinical use and 350 kinds of Chinese medical herbs with different efficiency.The translator was mainly responsible for Chapter One(Chinese Medical Herbs and Chinese Materia Medica)and Chapter Two(Development of Chinese Materia Medica: In the Period of Qin,Han,Three Kingdoms,Jin and Northern and Southern Dynasties),and took this as the research material to carry out translation practice and translation research.This study mainly guided by “Skopos theory”,proposed by Vermeer(1987),a famous translation theorist of the German functionalist school,which fully reflects the purpose of this translation task: responding to the strategic initiative of “the Belt and Road” which encourages culture to go out,to spread excellent traditional Chinese medicine culture.Skopos theory is the main theory of German Functionalist Approaches,including Skopos rule,coherence rule and fidelity rule.The translator selected Science of Chinese Materia Medica,Formulas of Traditional Chinese Medicine,Fundamental Theory of Traditional Chinese Medicine(2nd edition),several Chinese-English version teaching materials and so on as the parallel texts after analyzed factors such as the background information of the source text,the text type,and the text structure under the guidance of the three principles of Skopos theory.As a classroom record,there are so many difficulties such as technical terms of traditional Chinese medicine,Culture-loaded Words,the mixture of classical Chinese and modern Chinese,classical Chinese and colloquial expressions.Therefore,it’s difficult for the translator to complete this task.The translator specifically explained how to use the three principles of Skopos theory and select proper translation methods to solve the problems mentioned above.The translator selected Addition to translate the technical terms of traditional Chinese medicine under the guidance of Skopos rule,which can help target language readers to better understand the knowledge of traditional Chinese medicine to achieve the purpose of translation.The translator selected Addition to translate the Chinese dynasties under the guidance of coherence rule,which can increase the readability of the target text and the acceptability of the readers.The translator selected Literal translation to translate colloquial expressions which can preserve the original style of the source text,so that the target text can be more concise,smooth and accurate based on achieving the translation purpose and conforming to the expression habits of the target language.Through this translation task,the translator has made the following summary:1.The translator should pay special attention to the verification of technical terms related to the translation content,which is a key factor to improve the quality and accuracy of translation.2.The study and application of translation theory should be strengthened to be able to solve problems briskly and quickly and improve the translation efficiency.3.The translator should attach importance to the exchange and cooperation with colleagues in translation tasks,extensively follow advice of others,self-examination,and take the essence and discard the dregs continuously enhance our translation competence. |
