“San Yan”and “Er Pai” were created in the late of Ming dynasty, when commodityeconomic was rapid developing and new thought was replacing the old one. They reflectthese profound changes with their literature form.“San Yan” and “Er Pai” change theattitude to the merchants, and they create the new images of businessman which play animportant role in the Ming dynasty. Although “Er Pai” follows “San Yan”, theirbusinissman image have some similarities and differences.The paper compares the differences between “San Yan” merchants and “ErPai”merchants from two aspects: one is merchants image itself, the other is artistic description.In the image, the differences between “San Yan" businessman and "Er Pai" businessmenappear in their character, business pattern, consumption pattern, business ethics and theconcept of marriage.“San Yan” merchants are weak in their character, so they lackmasculinity. They earn money by their hard work and their good business ethics. However,when “San Yan” merchants become rich, they spend much money on enjoyment and farmland. A lack of prospective consumption pattern is conservative. Similarly, their concept ofmarriage is also conservative.“San Yan” merchants value chastity, value family, theyfollow the feudal ethical code. In contract,“Er Pai” merchants are more brave and smart.They try their best to earn money, even violating the business ethics. Because of theirdesire for money,“Er Pai” merchant spend their money on the premise of expandingbusiness. In the problem of marriage, the thoughts of " Er Pai " businessman are relativelyopen. They dare to break the shackles of feudal ritual to pursue love and marriageaccording to their desires. In the description of the arts,"San Yan" and "Er Pai" has theirown features in many aspects. Feng Menglong adopts the realistic writing technique todescribe the details of merchants in the perspective of citizens. He hope he can influencepeople with his description. However,“Er Pai" focuses on businessman ’s dream, pursue,and their shrewd business means with a more broad perspective. In order to make the storylively and interesting, Ling Mengchu use much accidental and coincidental plot. In order to demonstrate the difference between “San Yan” merchants and “Er Pai”merchants, this paper cite a large number of examples of the novels. What’s more, thepaper analyzes the reasons of differences. In the further analysis,“San Yan” merchants and“Er Pai” merchants show their unique brilliance and value. At the same time, the noveltheory of the authors and the the businessman culture of Ming dynasty are betterinterpreted.
