Abstract/Summary:
As an authentic and exploratory form of art, documentaries function todisseminate a country’s culture, life style and values worldwide. Good subtitletranslation ensures a higher level of receptivity of a documentary, which is conduciveto its entry into the overseas market and the promotion of national image. So far, documentary subtitle translation has not been researched extensively in the academia, and relevant strategies have not been discussed systematically. Based on previousstudies and the author’s translating practice, the thesis aims to probe into the keyfeatures of documentary subtitle translation, its similarity to and difference from othertypes of audiovisual translation, and the major problems occurring in the translatingprocess together with the corresponding solutions. Since documentaries mainly serveto convey information and facilitate cultural exchange, both information theory andintercultural communication theory are employed to address and tackle the range ofsubtitle translation problems, backed up by comparative text analysis and concreteexamples. The thesis concludes by proposing some translation strategies to cope withthe problems of redundancy and intercultural communication so as to facilitate deeperunderstanding and more effective practice of documentary interlingual subtitling inprofessional translation situations.
