Objective: To study the Chinese version of the Kayser-Jones Brief Oral Health Status Examination(BOHSE), test the reliability and validity,so as to evaluate the feasibility andinvestigate the oral health conditions of hospitalized elderly patients by the Chinese version of BOHSE.Methods: The original BOHSE was translated to Chinese and re-translated back, as well as cross-cultural was adapted. 120 hospitalized geriatric patients were surveyed by the Chinese version of BOHSE to test its reliability and validity and the oral health conditions of 1073 hospitalized elderly patients were screened by using convenience sampling and investigated by the Chinese version of BOHSE.Results: 1.The Chinese version of BOHSE showed that the internal consistency coefficient was 0.873, the retest reliability was 0.775, the inter-rater reliability was 0.737, and the construct validity coefficient was o.848.Five common factors which include tongue, gums between teeth and/or under artificial teeth, condition of natural teeth, pairs of teeth in chewing position and oral cleanliness were extracted and accounted for66.261% of the total variance.2. There are 653 people in young elderly group(60 74, A group) are,390 people in old elderly group(75 89, B group) and 30 people in longevous group(≥90, C group). The average scores of 1073 respondents were(7.451?2.104),the highest score were 15 points, the lowest score were2 points. 95.71% patients had oral cleanliness problems, 89.09%patients had problems of the gum and 87.33% had problems of the natural teeth. The swelling of lymph nodes were the lowest(5.60%). The scores between group A(6.94±1.93) and group B(8.20±2.10), group A and group C(8.67±2.43) are statistically significant differences(P < 0.01), group B and group C is no statistical difference(P﹥0.05).3. The average scores of 511 elderly male inpatients were(7.664±2.101) and 562 elderly female inpatients were(7.218±2.087)in the total 1073 respondents, the difference was statistically significant(p=0.001).The tongue(p=0.001), tissue inside cheek, floor and roof of mouth(p=0.003) and oral cleanliness(p=0.002) were statistically significant differences too. Conclusion: 1.The Chinese version of BOHSE demonstrates good reliability and validity which is suitable for the Chinese elderly.2.There are common oral health problems of hospitalized elderly patients and it is more outstanding as the age increasing.3.The oral health status of elderly male inpatients are poorer than elderly female inpatients, embodies the tongue, tissue inside cheek, floorand roof of mouth and oral cleanliness.4.The oral health screening should become a part of geriatric clinical nursing routine risk screening for early detection and treatment of oral problems that in order to avoid the oral health-related disease getting worse. At the same time, the interventions for oral health, lifestyle of elderly patients, especially elderly male patients should be addressed for improving the statues of their oral health.
