The specific mechanism of depression in PD is inconclusive, but research studies suggest a multifactorial process that includes psychosocial and/or an underlying neuropathological process involving abnormalities of central monoaminergic neurotransmitter systems, also it includes a series of responses to inflammation, stress es and the change of neurogenesis and neurotrophic factor. The diagnosis of depression in Parkinson’s disease needs to meet the criteria for Parkinson’s disease and depression, respectively.Studies support the use of the UK Parkinson’s Disease Society Brain Bank criteria for idiopathic PD and ICD-10 or DSM-IV for depression.Patients with depression have a high prevalence and bad long-term outcomes, findings in the research literature provide evidence concerning the dopamine receptor agonist, antidepressants(like SSRIs and SNRIs),CBT, rTMS and ECT, etc interventions for managing depression symptoms in PD appear promising. This paper summarizes the psychosocial and biological mechanisms and diagnosis of depression in Parkinson’s disease,it also includes pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions for depressed Parkinson’s disease.
