Objective To investigate the prevalence and characteristics of thyroid dysfunction in elderly patients, and the correlation analysis of subclinical hypothyroidism with atherosclerosis and cardiac function, respectively. Methods Two thousand seven hundred and fifty-eight inpatients in the First Hospital of Lanzhou University were randomly selected. According with the inclusive criteria, patients’ thyroid function testing results and other clinical data were analyzed. Results 1)The all detection rate of thyroid dysfunction testing in patients is as high as 24.4%,at the same time the increasing trend of the thyroid dysfunction detection rate with the increasing age gradually(c2=90.95,P<0.01), the thyroid dysfunction detection rate of male patients is 21.6%, and the thyroid dysfunction detection rate of female patients is 27.2%,which is higher than men’s observably(P<0.01);2) The detection rate of hyperthyroidism is 1.0%,the detection rate of hypothyroidism is 2.8% and the prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism is 19.6%.All of these increased with age(c2=8.31,P<0.05;c2=24.45,P<0.01;c2=70.97,P<0.01).However the detection rate of subclinical hyperthyroidism is only 1.0%and there was no significant association with increased age(c2=1.82,P>0.05);3) The level of TT3,TT4 decreased with age, and TSH elevated with increasing age(F=20.82,3.59,16.50,all P <0.05);4)Age, blood pressure, total cholesterol, triglycerides, low-density lipoprotein cholesterol, high-density lipoprotein cholesterol,α-HBDH, homocysteine and NT-pro BNP shown in the subclinical hypothyroidism group are significantly higher than the control group(all P <0.05);5)TSH was positively related to CF-PWV,CD-PWV,CR-PWV,E/E’,NT-pro BNP(r=0.482,0.473,0.476,0.164,0.275,all P<0.05),while no significant association was observed between TSH and LVEF%(r=0.588,P>0.05).Conclusions In the elderly patients, the levels of serum thyroid hormone and thyroid-stimulating hormone change with age, and the prevalence of subclinical hypothyroidism is extremely high which also increased with age. Subclinical hypothyroidism(SCH) is the risk factor of atherosclerosis and cardiac diastolic dysfunction.
