Background:Metabolic syndrome(MS) is a assembled state of metabolic risk factor for cardiovascular disease in individual. It is closely related to the development with the incidence of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Cardiovascular disease and diabetes health care are important health care issues. In China, the incidence of diabetes reached 9.7%. Given its tremendous physical, emotional, and financial burden, it is critical important to know the risk factors. Large amounts of data show that psychological and social factors may closely contribute to the occurrence of diseases, but whether or not personality factor can become one of the factors predicting MS occurrence is unclear. Objective:The objective of the present study is to test whether personality traits are associated with metabolic syndrome in a large Chinese population. Methods:MS prevalence survey was conducted during October to December 2011 in hangzhou caihe community.765 cases in community participants and 85 patients in line with the diagnostic criteria of MS admitted in Sir Run Run Shaw hospital endocrinology department at the same time were conducted ZKPQ questionnaire survey (Zuckerman-Kuhlman Personality Questionnaire, ZKPQ). Questionnaires were surveyed by trained professionals and were retrieved at the scene. The general clinical indicators and laboratory examination associated with metabolic syndrome were collected. Pearson correlation analysis and Logistic regression analysis were used.Results:(1) General data comparison:There was no statistically significant difference between the metabolic syndrome group and non-metabolic syndrome group in the proportion of gender, smoking, drinking. While the differences were statistically significant (P<0.05) with high-density lipoprotein cholesterol, triglycerides, postprandial 2h blood glucose, blood pressure, body mass index.(2) The ZKPQ score difference of the metabolic syndrome and non-metabolic syndrome:In the subjects’ personality features of the metabolic syndrome’s participants, metabolic syndrome group of neurotic anxiety and attacks hostile score is 7.06±3.56 and 6.64±2.35 respectively. While the score of non-metabolic syndrome is 5.60±2.80 and 4.86±1.82. The difference is statistically significant (p<0.05). While in the other ZKPQ personality dimensions, there were no statistically significant difference between the two groups.(3) The correlation analysis of personality dimensions with the components of metabolic syndrome:impulse and BMI, cholesterol are related. Neuroticism and blood glucose levels are related. Attacks or hostile and BMI, blood glucose are related. The difference is statistically significant (p<0.05). While social, lively and sensation seeking is no correlation between metabolic syndrome components.(4) Logistic regression analysis with the general data of the metabolic syndrome group and personality characteristics:Age, drinking, male, hostility, anxiety are the risk factors for the occurrence of metabolic syndrome..Conclusions:Metabolic syndrome group is associated with the personality traits of nervous or anxiety, attack or hostile. Advice can be adjusted by psychological counseling and decompression lifestyle to intervent the occurrence of metabolic syndrome.
