Objective:This research use electro-acupuncture combined with TCM decoction" Di Xin decoction"to treat on the vascular dementia(VaD) patients of the syndrome of mind-confusion-by-phlegm,to observe the change of patients’ cognitive functions, daily living skills, and TCM syndrome between before and after treatment, and to evaluate the effectiveness and the safety of the treatment programs in this research,so as to provide an objective foundation for the treatment of vascular dementia using acupuncture combined with medication.Methods:1.By using the method of random number, the 120 VaD patients are divided into two groups:the western medicine group and the comprehensive therapy group, with 60 cases in each group.2.The patients of western medicine group were given Donepezil and Nimodipine besides the cerebrovascular disease basis treatment of modulating blood pressure, blood glucose, blood fat, antiplatelet and so on. The patients of the comprehensive therapy group were treated by electro-acupuncture of "Baihui" (DU20),"Shenting"(DU24),"Benshen"(GB13),"Fenlong" (ST40),"Taichong"(LR3)for once a day,6 times per week, and the TCM decoction" Di Xin decoction"for once a day, combined with the treatment of western medicine group. Each group was treated for 90 day.3.Observe the change of MMSE scores,ADL scores and SDSVD scores on the two groups before and after treating.Results:1.Compared with pre-treatment,the MMSE scores of two groups were significantly higher after a 90-day treatment(P>0.05). Meanwhile, the MMSE scores of the comprehensive therapy group were significantly higher than those of the western medicine group after treatment(P>0.05),which indicates that the results of the two different ways in improving cognitive functions are both effective, and the effect of the comprehensive therapy group was better than that of the western medicine group.2.Compared with pre-treatment,the SDSVD scores of comprehensive therapy groups were significantly less after 90 days’treatment(P>0.05),but the difference on western medicine group was not significant, which indicates that the treatment of comprehensive therapy group could mitigate patients’TCM syndrome such as much-phlegm,dizzy,top-heavy,poor mental state and so on;while the treatments of western medicine group couldn’t produce such result.3.Compared with pre-treatment state, the ADL scores of the two groups were significantly less after 90 days’treatment(P>0.05). Meanwhile, the ADL scores of the comprehensive therapy group were significantly less than those of the western medicine group after treatment(P>0.05),which indicates that these treatments on improving VaD patients’daily living skills are both effective, with the effect of the comprehensive therapy group being better than that of the western medicine group.3.Conclusion:1.Donepezil and Nimodipine could improve cognitive functions and daily living skills of VaD patients.2. Treating by electro-acupuncture of "Baihui" (DU20),"Shenting"(DU24)," Benshen" (GB13),"Fenlong"(ST40),"Taichong"(LR3)and the TCM decoction"Di Xin decoction" basis in Donepezil and Nimodipine could improve cognitive functions and daily living skills of VaD patients, besides, this treatment was more effective than stern medicine only,so it is worthy to be popularized in clinic.3.Treating by electro-acupuncture of "Baihui" (DU20),"Shenting"(DU24)," Benshen"(GB13),"Fenlong"(ST40),"Taichong"(LR3)and the TCM decoction"Di Xin decoction" could significantly mitigate the TCM syndrome of VaD patients of the syndrome of mind-confusion-by-phlegm.The treatment of acupuncture combined medication has more advantages than using western medicine only on improving the patients’living quality.
