Objective:To explore the effect of Chinese medicine pillow for ischemic stroke patients with insomnia in terms of the duration of sleep, levels of serum cortisol and the situation of neurological deficit, which aimed at providing evidence for future clinical use. Methods:The true Chinese medicine pillow was made up by Chrysanthemum (80g), flowers(80g), Caulis Anshen class(80g), Magnetitum (50g) and borneol (10g). While for the appearance of the placebo pillow, it looks the same as the true pillow, but actually there were no Chinese medicine in it; According to the inclusion and exclusion criteria,66 ischemic stroke patients with insomnia were recruited and randomly divided into observation group and control group, with each 33 patients. The true Chinese medicine pillow was used in the observation group, and the placebo pillow was be used for control group, both groups received conventional treatment and care. After 15 days’s intervention, we evaluated the effect of Chinese medicine pillow for ischemic stroke patients with insomnia by comparing the scores of athens insomnia scale (AIS), levels of serum cortisol and the neurological deficit scores between groups and within groups.Result:1. The Baseline Assessment The general baseline of the patients including age, duration of disease, gender and education levels in both groups showed no significant difference (P>0.05) before the intervention.2. The Baseline Assessment of the Measurements The were no statistical differences between two groups before the intervention for the AIS score, levels of serum cortisol and the neurological deficit score, with the P value>0.05.3. Score of the AIS For the observation group, the score of AIS was significant lower than before after the intervention (P<0.01). While there was no significant change in control group (P>0.05). When compared the the score of AIS between two groups, the difference was significant, with the P value<0.01.4. Duration of Sleep in Night There was no significant difference between the two groups after the intervention (P>0.05).5. Levels of Serum cortisol The serum cortisol levels was higher than before for the within group comparisons (in both groups), and in terms of the between group comparison, the levels of serum cortisol in observation group was also higher than that of the control group (p<0.01).6. Score of Neurological Function Defect The scores of neurological function defection were significantly lower after the intervention in both observation group (p<0.01) and control group (p<0.05). For the between group comparison, the difference were also significant when compared with control group after the intervention (P<0.01). The effect of the observation group was better than that of the control group. Conclusion:Chinese medicine pillow can lower the score of AIS, it showed a positive effect for ischemic stroke patients’ sleep quality. Chinese medicine pillow can also prohibit the increasing of serum cortisol and promote the rehabilitation of neurological function in these patients. However, it can not improve the duration of sleep during night. Basically, Chinese Medicine pillow is an effective and simply intervention for improving the sleep quality of patients ischemic stroke with insomnia, and it can be applied and expanded in clinic.
