Background and Objective Growing evidence shows that essential hypertension (EH) is a chronic inflammatory disease. It is acknowledged that Th22 cells and interleukin-22 (IL-22) play a pivotal role in the pathophysiology of inflammation. We aimed to investigate the relationship between the expreession of Th22 cells and interleukin-22 (IL-22) with essential hypertension (EH).Methods 42 EH patients and 24 health control were collected in our study. The EH patients were divided into EH1(N=24) group and EH2(N=18) group according to the grading of primary hypertension. Detected the proportion of Th22 cells in peripheral blood of all cases by flow cytometry (FCM). The serum IL-22 levels were detected by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). We aim to investigate the relationship between Th22/IL-22 and EH.Results The proportion of Th22 cells with EH were significantly higher than normal adults(2.91±0.24% vs 0.96±0.17%; P<0.001), and distinct IL-22 expression was showed in EH compared with normal adults (17.21±2.59 pg/ml vs 5.67±1.35 pg/ml; P<0.001). Meanwhile the extent of Th22 cells proportion was positivly correlated with SBP (r=0.354,P=0.021) but the levels of DBP(r=0.270,P=0.084). The correlation about IL-22 expression, SBP and DBP had not been found (r=0.172, P=0.277; r=0.103, P=0.515). And we did not find significant difference of Th22/IL-22 between EH1 group and EH2 group (2.86±2.37% vs 2.97±2.26%, P=0.127; 16.91±2.26 pg/ml vs 17.62±3.01 pg/ml, P=0.388).Conclusions 1) Th22/IL-22 may involved in the immune initial onset of essential hypertension. It made a useful exploration to elaborate on the occurrence and evolution between Th22/IL-22 and EH.2) It needs to confirm by further researchs that the relationship between Th22/IL-22 and the progression of essential hypertension.
