ObjectivesWith the growing of the incidence and serious disease burden, dementia has become a global public health problem. Dementia screening may provide a potential mechanism for decreasing this burden by identifying the disease earlier. This study aims to develop a reliable and valid instrument to measure elderly people’s attitudes about dementia screening in China. The elderly people’s attitudes about dementia screening in Zhengzhou was also assessed by applying the questionnaire combined with semi-structured interviews, so as to understand the status of elderly people’s attitudes about dementia screening and its influencing factors, provide valuable information for the smooth implementation of dementia screening.Methods1. Introduce the PRISM-PC questionnaire to China through the “translation-back translation- cultural adjustment- preliminary test” model after we got the authorization of professor Boustani, assessing the reliability and validity of the questionnaire strictly and developing the Chinese version of PRISM-PC questionnaire.2. Applying the Chinese version of PRISM-PC questionnaire to investigate, evaluate and analyze the state of the 423 elderly people’s attitudes about dementia screening in the community of Zhengzhou.3. The semi-structured interview method was used to collect data from 15 elderly people who met the inclusion criteria in the community, and the influencing factors ofinvolving in dementia screening were further explored.Results1. Formed the Chinese version of the PRISM-PC questionnaire for elderly people. The questionnaire consisted of 29 items, five dimensions. The five dimensions include:acceptance of dementia screening(6 items); benefits of dementia screening(8 items);stigma of dementia screening(7 items); negative impact of dementia screening on independence(4 items) and suffering related to dementia screening(4 items). The coefficient of internal consistency of the questionnaire(Cronbach’s alpha coefficient)was in the range of 0.724~0.944, the test-retest reliability was 0.739, and the I-CVI was in the range of 0.83~1.00. Five factors were extracted by exploratory factor analysis and the cumulative variance contribution rate was 72.213%.2. The average score of the acceptance of dementia screening dimension was(50.95+21.90), the benefits of dementia screening dimension was(67.22+14.72), the stigma of dementia screening dimension(43.82+14.36), the negative impact of dementia screening on independence dimension was(44.93+10.45) and the suffering related to dementia screening dimension was(65.23+18.64). Multiple linear regression results showed that educational levels, occupations, income, ages, living statuses, knowing someone with dementia and memory states entered the regression equation of PRISM-PC questionnaire.3. Through analysing, sorting and refining of the interview data, three topics driven from it:coping attitudes, medical resource, limiting factors.ConclusionsThe Chinese version of PRISM-PC questionnaire has good reliability and validity, which is suitable for the usage in elderly in China. Understanding the elderly people’s perceptions about dementia screening and the influencing factors of involving in dementia screening, we can provide the personalized health education about the dementia screening and convenient nursing services, in order to smoothly implement of the dementia screening and prevention plan.
