Purpose To explore the mediator and variation tendency of benefit finding among breast cancer patients during chemotherapy based on the model of stress process. So as to provide theoretical support for the psychological nursing intervention. Methods Research Ⅰ:Totally 300 breast cancer patients which came from two hospitals in Anhui province were investigated with the General Questionnaire, Benefit Finding Scale (BFS), Impact of Event Scale-Revised (IES-R), Social Support Rating Scale (SSRS), Medical Coping Modes Questionnaire (MCMQ) and Revised Life Orientation Test (LOT-R). Data were inputted with Epidata3.0 and analysed by SPSS 16.0 to explore the effects of general information, cognitive evaluation, social support, coping modes, optimism tendency on benefit finding among breast cancer patients. Research Ⅱ:In this part we used longitudinal study to investigate 166 breast cancer inpatients which came from two hospitals in Anhui province. Benefit finding was measured based on four time points:four days after operation, one month after operation, three months after operation, five months after operation. The explore of variation tendency was analyzed using repetitive measurement deviation analysis. Results Research Ⅰ:(1) The score of BFS was 47.88±13.43;intrusion, avoidance, hyper-arousal and cognitive evaluation were 12.21 ± 5.18,12.89 ± 4.57,7.98 ± 4.38, 33.07 ± 12.62 respectively; subjective support, objective support, support utilization and social support were 25.38 ± 3.88,9.81 ± 2.63,7.32 ± 2.18,42.50±6.97 respectively; confrontation, avoidance and resignation were 17.79 ± 4.00,16.61 ± 2.07,9.25 ± 2.89 respectively; optimism tendency was 13.92 ± 4.21. (2) Univariate analysis showed differences in benefit finding for breast cancer patients at domicile place, marital status, educational level, family relationship, monthly income, form of payment, financial burden, chemotherapy, recurrence and metastasis (P<0.05). (3) The score of BFS was positively correlated with subjective support, objective support, support utilization, confrontation, avoidance and optimism tendency (r=0.365,0.278,0.322,0.439,0.377, 0.311, P<0.01), while negatively correlated with intrusion, avoidance, hyper-arousal and resignation (r=-0.484,-0.336,-0.419,-0.532, P<0.01). (4) Multiple regressions showed that optimism tendency, confrontation, chemotherapy, intrusion, avoidance, recurrence and educational level entered the regression equation, which explained about 48.3% of the total variance. Research Ⅱ:(1) The scores of benefit finding was the worst after operation and then escalated during the course. Conclusions Research Ι:The breast cancer patients possibly have a sense of benefit Finding. And general information, cognitive evaluation, coping modes and optimism tendency may have different aspects and degrees on benefit finding. Research Ⅱ:Compared with other period during chemotherapy, the scores of benefit finding was the worst after operation. The medical staff should pay more attention to the patients and take interventions to improve the level of benefit finding.
