Objective:To explore the change of vitamin A(VA) serum concentrations in febrile seizures(FS), to determine whether VA was associated with FS or not。Methods:1.A total of 49 patients with FS hospitalized in the neurology department of children’s hospital of Chongqing Medical University,29 children with epilepsy(EP), and 49 health children in Child section for physical examination were chosen. For the children with FS on admission and at discharge, children with EP and health children,2mL venous blood samples were extracted through venipuncture.VA concentrations in serum samples were analyzed with High performance liquid chromatography(HPLC)method.2.Comparisons of serum VA levels during acute phase among groups according to FS personal information and clinical characteristics.3.Comparisons of serum VA levels among FS group, EP group and health group.4.Comparisons of serum VA levels among children with FS during acute phase, recovery phase and health children.5.SPSS 13.0 software was used for statistical analysis, statistical significance was set at p<0.05.Results:l.Of 49 FS in the present analysis,36 (73.5%) aged from six months to three years old, boys were more than girls(1.8:1),32(65.3%) were complex FS.2.There were no statistical differences of serum VA concentrations among different group according to personal information.3.There were no statistical differences of serum VA concentrations among different seizure types, seizure durations and seizure frequencies.4.There were no correlation among seizure frequencies, seizure durations and the serum VA levels.5.The children in FS group had significantly lower serum VA levels compared with EP group, and health children group (P<0.05). There were no statistical differences of serum VA concentrations between EP group and health group.6.The incidence of VAD in FS group was significantly higher compared with EP group, health children group (p<0.05). There were no statistical differences of incidence of VAD between EP group and health group (p>0.05).7.Of 49 FS,18 were also measured serum VA levels at discharge. For the 18 FS patients, the serum VA levels in recovery phase of FS were significantly higher compared with acute phase (P<0.05).There were no statistical differences of serum VA concentrations between recovery group and health group (P>0.05).Conclusion:FS children during acute-phase has lower VA concentrations, and the levels of serum VA will rise during recovery-phase, which suggest serum VA may have an influence on FS. There are no correlations among seizure frequencies, seizure durations and the serum VA levels.
