Currently, with the improvement of people’s living standards, cardiovascular, cerebrovascular disease and hyperlipoidemia etc. have been becoming a hazard to human health. These diseases are correlated with the lipid peroxidation and metabolic disorders which are caused by the excessive free radicals. Medicinal and Edible contains a variety of active ingredients which have the actions of hypolipemic, antioxidant, hypoglycemic and enhancing immunity etc. Compared with the western drugs, some advantages of multipath, safety and fewer side effects are existed in Medicinal and Edible.Eight common medicinal and edible medicine of hawthorn, arrowroot, coix, cassia, lily, yams, white beans and radish were selected in this study. The main objectives are as follows:To evaluate their antioxidant capacities by DPPH. To investigate the lipid-lowering effects of eight medicinal and edible medicine on High Blood Cholesterol Model rat. To investigate the antioxidant effects of eight medicinal and edible medicine on High Blood Cholesterol Model rat. To investigate the effects of medicinal and edible medicine with good antioxidant capacities on liver and spleen by toxicological slice experiment. To detect the SOD and CAT mRNA expression levels by semi-quantitative RT-PCR. To analysis the antioxidant components of better antioxidant medicinal and edible medicine by Multiple Regression Analysis. The results were as follows:(1) The indexes of weight, liver, spleen, and pancreas were significantly decreased in eight medicine groups when compared with the high blood cholesterol group(p<0.05). No significant difference was observed between the eight medicinal and edible groups and the positive drug group. The levels of serum TC in all groups were significantly increased except Lily group(P<0.05 or P<0.01). Cassia, yams, white beans and radish could significantly(P<0.05 or P<0.01) decreased the levels of TG in serum except arrowroot, hawthorn and coix. Significant(P<0.05 or P<0.01) reduction of LDL-C levels in serum were observed in all medical groups except Cassia and hawthorn groups.(2) The IC50 values of hawthorn, arrowroot, coix, cassia, lily, yams, white beans, radish were 0.0352±0.003,0.0373±0.005,0.0460±0.012,0.1199±0.026, 0.0617±0.013,0.1229±0.024,0.0435±0.008 and 0.2677±0.028, respectively. The scavenging ability of eight medicinal and edible medicine against DPPH decreased in the order:hawthorn> kudzu> white beans> cassia> yam> coix> lily> radish.(3) The SOD、CAT、GSH-PX、T-AOC and GSH indexes in eight medicinal and edible medicine groups were higher than High Blood Cholesterol model group(P< 0.01). The MDA index was higher than High Blood Cholesterol model group (P< 0.01). Hawthorn, Kudzu and White beans could effectively releave the damage in liver and spleen tissue caused by high cholesterol diet.(4) The results showed that Hawthorn, Kudzu and white beans could up-regulate the SOD and CAT mRNA gene expression. This may be through increasing the relative protein synthesis. The SOD and CAT mRNA express in Hawthorn and Kudzu groups were significantly enhanced (p<0.05), while this was not found in white beans group (P>0.05).
