In Shanxi, Republic of China, “The Medical Journal” was founded in June 1921 by Shanxi Taiyuan Traditional Chinese Medicine Research and Improvement Institute, which was issued altogether 96 journals until it stopped its publication until November 1937. The journal was one of the earliest published, widely distributed and published for a long time span journals. It enjoys a high reputation at the time, as well as the very high historical and academic value.Considering external characteristics of “The Medical Journal”, the publication of the journal was very successful at that time. It was mainly reflected in three aspects:(1) It was a regular journal that was published continuously for a long time;(2) It has been done routinely and followed its route;(3) It was with a fixed price and varied promotion.From all kinds of each perspective, “The Medical Journal” was one of traditional Chinese academic medical journal, but had the following three characteristics: firstly, it provided a communication platform; secondly, it opened columns to enlarge influences; finally, it did enhance the propaganda of Traditional Chinese Medicine Research and Improvement Institute.After making an analysis based on 2981 authors of “The Medical Journal”, it seems certain that “The Medical Journal” was regarded as one of the most influential journal of traditional Chinese medicine. The journal attracted many famous traditional Chinese medicine doctors in heyday Jiangsu and Zhejiang provinces. Moreover, members of Traditional Chinese Medicine Research and Improvement Institute are mostly native of Shanxi other than other provinces, honorary directors are mostly people from other provinces. In addition to lavish gifts and handsome salaries for honorary members of Traditional Chinese Medicine Research and Improvement Institute at the beginning nationwide, also depends on its strong official background.From the content of “The Medical Journal”, it was in combination with current affairs, paid attention to the inheritance and carried forward the Traditional Chinese academy, advocated the innovation of traditional Chinese medicine and promoted the fusion of Chinese and western medicine. Many papers were published about academic researches of traditional Chinese medicine, mainly including medicine, pharmacy, pharmacology these three aspects. Besides, it also published a lot about improvement of Traditional Chinese Medicine Research and Improvement Institute and its attached medical school’s development, struggle of traditional Chinese medicine, the content of information exchange, etc.In “The Medical Journal”, digital content involved is mainly to categorize, analyze, build the medical journal knowledge base using computer technology(ACCESS, SQL SERVER 2003), including the “The Medical Journal” knowledge base, prescription related database, Chinese medicine knowledge base, eventually provide graphic format associated with retrieval based on metadata.
