ObjectiveTo evaluate the clinical efficacy of combined oral and intratympanic glucocorticoids treatment for severe to profound sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SSNHL).MethodsThe patients with SSNHL in our department from January 2013 to May 2014 were retrospectively analyzed, finally fifty-four patients with severe to profound SSNHL were studied. All the patients were treated with oral glucocorticoids, vasodilators and anticoagulants. The patients in the treatment group received additional intratympanic glucocorticoids. The pre-and post-treatment hearings were examined with audiometry. The curative effects of two groups were compared.Results1. The effective rate was 57.6% in the treatment group and 71.4% in the control group. The improvements of pure tone average (PTA) were 22.2±21.2dB HL and 37.0±25.0dB HL respectively. Hearings in both groups were improved significantly after treatment (P<0.01), but there was no difference in efficacy between groups (t=1.343, P=0.194).2. Both the efficacies for severe and profound SSNHL patients in the treatment group were same to those in the control group (t=1.253,P=0.251; t=0.912,P=0.380 respectively).ConclusionThe combined systemic and intratympanic glucocorticoids treatment for severe to profound SSNHL patients is effective in hearing improvements, while the efficacy is not better than that by systemic glucocorticoids alone.
