Objective: To detect the expression of PIRH2 in renal cell carcinoma, renal benign tumor and normal kidney tissue, analyzing the correlation between the expression of PIRH2 and the clinical pathological characteristics of renal cell carcinoma, exploring the clinical significance and role of PIRH2 in renal cell carcinoma. Methods: 110 cases of renal cell carcinoma were collected with pathologic confirmed and complete clinical data in the urology department of Fujian provincial hospital from January 2011 to May 2014. There were 71 cases male, 39 cases female, age ranged form 27 to 78(average age of 55.4). There were 93 cases of clear cell carcinoma, 17 cases of papillary carcinoma; among 110 cases, 56 cases were of high differentiated, 35 cases of middle differentiated and 19 cases of low or no differentiated according to the pathological grade from the WHO in 1997. among 110 cases, 47 cases were of stage I, 36 cases were of stage II, and 27 cases were of stage III and IV according to the 2010 AJCC clinical stage. 16 cases had lymph node metastasis. 20 cases of benign renal tumor, including 15 cases of renal angiomyolipoma, 5 cases of renal oncocytoma, and 20 cases of normal kidney tissues due to injuries and other reasons for the removal of the kidney as control group. All cases had never received radiotherapy, chemotherapy or any other biological therapy before operation. Immunohistochemistry was applied to detect the expression of PIRH2 in renal carcinoma, renal benign tumor and normal kidney tissues. Results: The positive expression rate of PIRH2 in group of renal cell carcinoma, renal benign tumor, normal kidney tissues was 69.09%(76/110), 10%(2/20), 0% respectively. The positive rate of PIRH2 were much higher in renal cell carcinoma than in renal benign tumor(P<0.01). The difference was statistically significant among pathological grade(P<0.05), clinical stage(P<0.01), and lymph node metastasis(P<0.05). But PIRH2 expression level was not associated with pathological type, gender, age, and tumor size(P>0.05).Conclusion: Expression of PIRH2 is significantly higher in RCC tissue. Their high positive expression correlated significantly with pathological histological grade, clinical stage, and lymphaden metastasis of RCC, there was no significantly correlation between PIRH2 expression and RCC of pathological type, tumor size, gender and age. PIRH2 may participate in the development of the progress of renal cell carcinoma, and is associated with invasion and metastasis of tumor. Our results indicate that PIRH2 may become biomarkers for early diagnosis and prognosis of RCC, and may become a new drug targets for RCC.
