Objective Total knee arthroplasty(TKA) is one of the most effective and successful operations for the treatment of various end-stage or severe knee diseases. However, there is no consensus about routine patella resurfacing in TKA. To investigate the efficacy of patellar arthroplasty in one-stage bilateral total knee arthroplasty(TKA) for the treatment of knee osteoarthritis(OA).Methods A total of 30 cases(60 knees) undergoing bilateral TKA were selected from the Department of Orthopaedic Surgery, Affiliated Hospital of Qiingdao University between February 2013 and February 2014. Informed consent was obtained. Regardless of left/right side, the 60 knees were randomly assigned to either the experimental group(30 knees, including 17 left and 13 right) for patellar arthroplasty or the control group(30 knees, including 13 left and 17 right) not receiving patellar arthroplasty. The 2 groups were compared on knee society score, anterior knee pain scale, range of motion, anterior patellar clunk and so on at month 3, 6 and 12 following the surgery. Results The experimental group and the control group did not differ significantly in KSS at month 3,6 and 12, in ROM at month 3,6and 12 following the surgery(all P>0.05).Conclusion Patellar Arthroplasty and non-Patellar Arthroplasty have the same short-term effectiveness in One-stage Bilateral Total Knee Arthroplasty for Osteoarthritis Treatment.
