Objective: Ovarian cancer is estimated to be one of the most common malignancy of the female genital and the first leading cause of death from gynecological cancer. Epithelial ovarian cancer accounts for the majority of ovarian malignancies. Fas is a prototypical death receptor that regulates tissue homeostasis mainly in the immune system through induction of apoptosis. It is broadly expressed in many cancer cells and play an important role in tumor growth and immune privilege. Establishment of this study is in order to investigate Fas expression in epithelial ovarian cancer, analyze their correlation with clinical pathology parameters and find the theoretical basis for ovarian cancer treatment.Method: Collected ovary tissue samples from January 2008 to December 2013 in the Ningxia Autonomous Region People’s Hospital which are histologically and clinically confirmed. Select no necrosis, no massive blood clots and no pigmented paraffin block among the archived ones and make serial section. All patient have complete clinical and pathology data and previously untreated. 20 samples of normal ovarian tissues,16 samples of benign ovarian tumors, 14 samples of borderline ovarian tumors and 70 samples of epithelial ovarian carcinomas were examined for the expression of Fas by immunohistochemistry. Analyze the relationship between Fas and pathology parameters(Histological type, clinical stage, tumor differentiation and lymphatic metastasis).Result: In ovarian carcinoma, borderline ovarian tumor, benign ovarian tumor and normal ovarian tissue the positive rate of Fas is : 94%, 71%, 25%, 15%. In borderline ovarian tumor and ovarian cancer in the expression of Fas was strongly positive, strongpositive expression rate was 44% and 14%, in benign ovarian tumor and normal ovarian tissue the expression of Fas was weakly positive. Expression of Fas in epithelial ovarian carcinoma and borderline ovarian tumor is obviously higher than the benign ovarian tumor and normal ovary tissue, the difference is significant(P<0.05). The difference between normal and benign group, epithelial ovarian carcinoma and borderline ovarian tumor is non-statistically significant(P﹥0.007). Expression of Fas in epithelial ovarian carcinoma is strongly correlated with clinical stage, tumor differentiation and lymphatic metastasis(P﹤0.01), but it has no correlation with histological type(P﹥0.05).Conclusions: 1. Expression of Fas is related with malignant degree of ovarian tumors. Expression of Fas in epithelial ovarian carcinoma is strongly correlated with clinical stage, tumor differentiation and lymphatic metastasis, but it has no correlation with histological type. 2. Fas plays an important role in the progression and invasion of ovarian cancer, it is expected to provide a new direction for the treatment of epithelial ovarian cancer.
