Objective The etiological spectrum of intestinal obstruction has differences in different periods or different countries. We want to know the pattern of bowel obstruction in Ningxia area,and to finger out the morbidity trends AND mortality.Methods It’s a retrospective study. We collected data of 4908 consecutive patients diagnosed with intestinal obstruction from 2004 to 2013 at the affiliated hospital of Ningxia Medical University. The etiology of the cases was categorized, and the correlation mortality was analyzed.Results There were 4908 patients with intestinal obstruction included. We found that the cases of intestinal obstruction increased annually. A total of 4908 cases,the high peak age groups of the intestinal obstruction patients were over 50 years old with more males than females(M:F=1.50:1). In the children, the most frequent cause was indigitation(39.9%),and next was adhesions(31.3%). In the mid-age, 60.7% were caused by adhesions, and 17.1% were caused by neoplasms. the main cause of obstruction in the old was adhesions(41.0%)and followed by neoplasms(32.6%)with hernia coming third(8.3%). There were 73% of the patients to undergo Nonoperative therapy. The mortality rate of the whole was 4.7%(231/4908).Conclusion The bowel obstruction patients admitted to the hospital increased significantly in the past 10 years. The pattern of intestinal obstruction by age group was different.
