Objective: To evaluate the value and characteristic of automated breast volume scanner(ABVS) coronal plane in the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant breast space-occupying lesions.Material and methods: During the period ranging from May 2014 to November 2015, bilateral breast examinations using ABVS and HHUS were performed in 200 women. All the patients enrolled in the research who went to our hospital for physical examinations received the surgery. And every lesion thereafter underwent pathological assessments. There are 200 patients with the total number of 230 lesions, including 147 benign lesions, 83 malignant lesions. In this study, we used ACUSON S2000 ABVS in combination with 14L5 BV transducer(14 MHz, 15.4 cm) which was specially designed for the equipment. Patients may take lateral position or supine position when they were examined.Every breast lesions were performed by 2D ultrasonic imaging firstly, which contained the size, shape, boundary and echo inside in the tumors.Thenstarted the color Doppler flow imaging mode to observe the blood flow condition of the breast tumors. Then turn on the ABVS,With patients in a supine position, a wedge was used to flatten the breast, adjusted to the expected breast size. The scanning time was one minute per view and minor pressure was added to breast to prevent breast movement. Three standard views(coronal, longitudinal, and transverse views) were taken for each to ensure that the entire breast was covered. Obtained volume data were migrated from ACUSON S2000 ABVS to the workstations and then displayed in multiplannar reconstruction. The value of diagnosis was analyzed. To evaluate the value of automated breast volume scanner(ABVS) coronal plane in the differential diagnosis of benign and malignant breast space-occupying lesions. Results: ABVS can provide more information on the bases of 2D ultrasonic imaging. ABVS is also advantageous in that it is not dependent on the examiners, it can visualize the breast within the visual field and it is less time-consuming. It is therefore presumed that it is feasible for clinical applications and is a useful modality in diagnosing breast lesions. 1. In ABVS coronary section, for the diagnosis of“convergence symptom”: the specificity, sensitivity, accuracy, positive, predictive value(PPV) and negative predictive value( NPV) were 89.8%, 71.1%, 83.0%, 79.7%, 84.6% respectively. The difference in benign or malignant tumours of breast with “convergence symptom”is statistically significant( P<0.05). 2. The occurrence rate of the sign of breast cancer(d<2.0cm)on the coronal plane, named“converge symptom”was 85.5%. 3. There was no obvious difference within different breast tumours groups by axillary lymph node state in the presentation of convergence symptom. 4.ABVS could be employed as a useful modality for diagnosing carcinoma with higher diagnostic valuation that was superior to US.ABVS combined with US is upmost. Conclusion:Ultrasound ABVS provides a new valuable indexfor the use of ultrasound in diagnosing benign or malignant breast tumours and is a new supplement of two-dimensional ultrasound.
