Objective: ①Compare epileptic children’s personality with normal children’s in order to explore personality characteristics of children with epilepsy. ②Analyse the influence of various clinical factors in epileptic children’s personality, and provide guidance for clinic intervation. Methods: We use Eysenck Personality Questionnaire(EPQ) to evaluate personality of 102 cases of children with epilepsy and 50 cases of normal children, while collecting general information and clinical data(age at onset, course of disease, seizure type, seizure frequency, EEG with or without abnormal discharge and iatrogenic factors). General information and personality of patient group and normal group of children are compared by using Chi-square test or T test. In terms of gender, age, age of onset, seizure type, EEG whether the abnormal discharge and the extent of disease control in children with epilepsy, T-test and analysis of variance are used to compare in groups; pearson correlation analysis is applied to explore various clinical characteristics of children with epilepsy and its relationship of personality; multiple linear regression method is used to screen out clinic factors which has a linear relationship with personality of children with epilepsy.Results:(1) Compared with the group of normal children, group of children with epilepsy have lower score in extraversion and score higher on neuroticism(P<0.01).(2)In terms of extraversion and neuroticism, we compare scores of different age group s with overall statistically significance(P<0.05).(3)Personality of children with different age of onset is compared with overall significant difference in psychoticism and neuroticism scores(P<0.05).(4)Neuroticism score of children with epilepsy whose EEG is abnormal discharge is higher than those whose EEG is normal and the difference is statistically significant(P<0.05).(5) Non treatment group, disease non control group and disease control group of children personality are compared, and neuroticism scores overall statistically significant difference(P<0.05).(6) Personality of epileptic children with different gender, course of disease and seizure type is compared in groups with no significant difference(P>0.05).(7)Correlation analysis shows: extraversion scores of children with are negatively related to patients’ age, course of disease and time of seizure duration.(4) Linear multiple regression analysis on factors: the independent variable of abnormal EEG discharges and dependent neuroticism has a linear relation. Conclusion: Children with epilepsy have introverted and high neurotic personality. Many factors contribute to the formation of personality which is owned by epileptic children, such as age, age of onset, course of disease, seizure duration, EEG abnormal discharge and treatment outcome. The abnormal discharge of EEG may be the most important factors which influence the characteristic of neuroticism like emotional instability.
