Objective: To observe and analyze the clinical efficacy and safety of Chinese herbal medicine compound preparation, Xue Shuan Xin Mai Ning in treating mild to moderate vascular dementia(hereafter referred to as VD) patients. Methods: From August 2012 to January 2014, seventy-two cases of VD patients met our study criteria were included in this study. They were randomized into treatment group and control group and thirty-six patients were involved in each group. All the patients received basic treatment, of which, those in the treatment group were treated with Xue Shuan Xin Mai Ning tablets(400mg / tablet) twice a day and 3 tablets each time and those in the control group were treated with Nimodipine tablets(30mg / tablet) 3 times a day and 1 tablet each time. After two courses of treatment(8 weeks), mini-mental state examination(hereafter referred to as MMSE), Mo CA and activities of daily living scale(hereafter referred to as ADL) were adopted to assess the two groups. Results: After two courses of treatment, the scores of MMSE and Mo CA were significantly higher(P<0.05); while the score of ADL was significantly lower(P<0.05) both in the treatment group and the control group. 1. MMSE scale scores: In both groups, significant differences(P<0.05) were observed before and after two courses of treatment. There was no significant difference(P>0.05) between the two groups after two courses of treatment. It shows that the two drugs can improve the intelligence levels in VD patients. However, there is no significant difference between the two drugs in terms of the improvement in MMSE score. 2. Mo CA scale scores: In both groups, significant differences(P<0.05) were observed before and after two courses of treatment. There was no significant difference(P>0.05) between the two groups after two courses of treatment. It indicates that the two drugs can improve the intelligence levels in VD patients. However, there is no significant difference between the two drugs in terms of the improvement in Mo CA score. 3. ADL scale scores: In both groups, significant differences(P<0.05) were observed before and after two courses of drug treatment. It reveals that the two drugs can improve VD patients’ daily living ability. However, there is no significant difference between the two drugs(P>0.05). Adverse reactions: In experiments, it was found that after three weeks of treatment, two patients had mild stomach discomfort and after six weeks of treatment, 3 patients had mild diarrhea in nimodipine group. In view of relatively mild symptoms, no other drugs were employed for treatment and the symptoms relieved itself, which indicates that this may have nothing to do with nimodipine tablets in the control group; no obvious discomfort was found in patients treated with Xue Shuan Xin Mai Ning. No significant liver function, kidney function, cardiopulmonary function impairment and other possible drug-related adverse reactions were found during the treatment for the two groups, which indicates that Xue Shuan Xin Mai Ning and nimodipine tablets are safe and have less adverse reactions in clinical application. Conclusion: Xue Shuan Xin Mai Ning and nimodipine tablets can effectively improve VD patients’ cognitive abilities, including the execution ability, which are safe and well tolerated. Xue Shuan Xin Mai Ning is more effective than nimodipine control group and there are significant differences between the two groups after the treatment, which not only presents the advantages of traditional Chinese medicine in VD treatment, but develops a new idea for the clinical treatment of VD.
