Objective:The study detects some clinical indexes in moderate and severe periodontitis before and after orthodontic treatment, and compared the results with those patients with healthy periodontal conditions. We study in the probability、characteristic and effectiveness of periodontal orthodontic treatment in moderate and severe periodontitis. We aim to provide guidance for the prognosis and tooth preservation of moderate and severe periodontitis who undergo orthodontic treatment. Methods:This study selected10periodontitis patients that came to orthodontics department in the Second Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University, including1males and9females, mean age37.3±9.8years old, defined as the experimental group. We also selected10malocclusion patients with normal periodontal status, including5males and5females, mean age23.4±3.0years old, defined as the control group. We detected the following periodontal indexes before and after orthodontic treatment in both two groups: plaque index (PLI), bleeding on probing (BOP), bleeding index (BI), papilla presence index(PPI), probing pocket depth (PD) and clinical attachment loss (CAL).We also measure the distance from CEJ to the top of alveolar crest in the panoramic radiograph (AH).Results:When periodontal disease came into resting phase, we found no significant differences of PI and BI in the follow-up treatment in the experimental group. We found great decrease in PPI、PD、CAL and AH scores(p<0.5) before and after orthodontic treatment in the experimental group, however, there was still great significance compared with the control group. All indexes showed no significant difference in the control group before and after orthodontic treatment (p>0.5). All teeth with periodontal disease were successfully conserved during orthodontic treatment. Conclusion:Orthodontic treatment can improve gingival esthetic and help to regain normal overbite and overyet, which contribute to the esthetic of anterior teeth in periodontitis. It also contributes to better plaque control and alveolar bone rebuild, which benefit to maintain efficacy of periodontal treatment. Moderate and severe periodontitis patients can undergo orthodontic treatment in resting phase, and standard orthodontic treatment can effectively conserve teeth with periodontal disease.
