Objective: To investigate the clinical results after sequential periodontal treatment of moderate to severe periodontitis patients. Methods: A total of 10 patients who had moderate to severe periodontitis and demonstrated alveolar bone resorption II or III degrees on radiographs participated in the study. Carrying out a comprehensive periodontal inspection, and then work ed out an appropriate the program. After the initial examination, they received instruction about oral hygiene and then sequential periodontal treatment. To be specific we carried out periodontal maintenance every 3 months and clinical, observation for 12 months. The clinical parameters of probing depth(PD) and bleeding index(BI) were measured respectively at preoperative,3,6 and 12 months after treatment. To compared the differences between periodontal initial treatment of 12 months and the preoperative. Results: 1. Periodontal initial treatment and supportive periodontal therapy were conducted, and 4 patients were significantly improved. After periodontal initial treatment of 12 months, the gingival inflammation were disappeared, and the PD and the BI were reduced. There are significant significance in PD, BI between periodontal initial treatment of 12 months and the preoperative(P<0.05). 2. 4 patients with 14 teeth need periodontal surgery when their had PD>5mm and BOP(+) after initial periodontal therapy. After spplication of guided tissue regeneration(GTR), bleeding, inflection, and pain didn't happen. And the radiographic appearance suggested osseous fill and bone density increased. At 12 months after sequential periodontal treatment, there were significantly improvements in PD, BI than those in the 3 months(P<0.05). 3. 2 patients were satisfied with the splints, the probing depth and the occlusal force were sharply ameliorated after the porcelain-fused-to-metal bridge treatment. At 12 months after sequential periodontal treatment, there were significantly improvements in PD than those in the 3 months(P<0.05),but BI were not improvements(P>0.05)Conclusion: 10 patients with moderate to severe periodontitis after periodontal systematic treatment showed effectiveness in treatment. The long-term clinical effect remains to be further observation.
