Objective:To understand the cognitive status of HIV/AIDS among young students in two cities, to evaluate the effect of HIV/AIDS health education of three modes (distributing promotional materials, watching video, onsite lecturing), and to explore the applicability of these three different modes among young students in different cities, so to provide information and evidence for HIV/AIDS health education among schools or communities in the future. Methods:In Xinyu and Yichun, a total of1,647young students were investigated in terms of HIV/AIDS related knowledge, attitudes, behaviors, and related information access routes using self-designed anonymous questionnaire. Three health education modes were carried out among the students, and each student filled out the same questionnaire before and after one mode of heath education respectively. Then the chi-square test, nonparametric test method and logistic regression analysis method were used to analyze the data in this study. Awareness rate of HIV/AIDS related knowledge was defined as the proportion of those who answered correctly six or more questions among those who answered all the eight questions. Results:More young students got HIV/AIDS related knowledge from TV and papers or books, and most of them would like to get HIV knowledge from TV and the internet. For students in Medical School of Yichun University, they had the highest awareness rate of HIV related knowledge (78.2%), and followed by students from Sports School of Yichun University (44.0%), Yushui First High School (37.4%), and Xinyu Third High School (32.0%). More young students (71.0%to97.8%) knew that HIV could be spread through blood, sharing needles, and giving birth to child; however, less students knew whether HIV risk could be reduced having only one sex partner (47.3%-86.1%), neither HIV could be spread through daily contact (41.7%-84.2%), nor ear piercing, tattoos, teeth extracting, mosquito biting and blood donating (26.8%-83.0%). The proportion of students who were not afraid of HIV/AIDS in Medical School (29.9%) was lower than students from the other three schools (37.3%,32.7%,34.2%). Among all the students, a higher proportion of them (62.1%-90.4%) would like to participate in HIV/AIDS health education activities, however, a lower proportion of them (12.5%-60%) would like to make friends with HIV/AIDS patients. For students from Yushui First High School, they had the highest proportion of those who oppose premarital sex (48.4%), and followed by students from Medical School (38.9%), Xinyu Third High School (36.3%), and Sports School (27.0%). On the whole, more college students (51.2%,30.1%) had or ever had fallen in love than high school students (12.2%,11.9%), also, more college students (14.1%,3.8%) had sexual experience than high school students (3.3%,3.8%). After the three modes of health education, the level of both HIV/AIDS related knowledge and attitudes were improved significantly, but variations of effect were obviously shown among students from different schools. The best mode of health education for the students from Xinyu Third High School and Yushui First High School were respectively watching video and onsite lecturing. For the students from Medical School, the best modes of health education were onsite lecturing and watching video, both of which were better than distributing promotional materials. Conclusion:The level of HIV/AIDS related knowledge, attitudes and behaviors were very different for students from different schools, and the level of Medical School students was the best, and the level of college students was better than high school students. The effect and applicability of three modes of health education varied among different schools. Targeted mode of health education should be carried out according the characteristics of students, so as to achieve better education effect.
