Development is an eternal theme for mankind. However, sustainable development is a new modern mode of development. Since the Industrial Revolution in the1760s, dramatic progress has been achieved in science and technological development as well as the rapid increase of productivity. By the mid.20th century, mankind had created unprecedented material civilization. In the age of the pursuit of material wealth, human focus on only economic growth leads to such global problems as the crisis of natural resources, environmental degradation. In the1970s, in the face of those serious problems, humans began to think and explore the development paths in the future, which helped to form the notion of sustainable development.Medical and health services are of great significance to one’s health and well-being, whose sustainable development is an important indicator of social benign development. The status of medical and health services is not optimistic. The hospitals tend to depend on the scale expansion, ignoring quality improvement. Medical services fall far short of satisfying the patients’ needs. The problems of the doctor-patient relationship and the high costs for healthcare are quite common. In addition, improper utilization of health resources and inefficiency in medical services, excessive use of disposable medical supplies, abuse of antibiotics seriously hinder the sustainable development of medical and health services.Studies have shown much interest in medical crisis, medical purpose, the sustainable development of medical and health services. But the definition and ethical values of the sustainable development of medical services are not clearly and fully formulated. Therefore, the current study on them has important theoretical and practical significance. What is the sustainable development of medical and health services? How is it interpreted from an ethical perspective? What are the key factors affecting the sustainable development? In what ways can the sustainable development be promoted? This article attempts to answer these questions. Thus the research contains the following ones.(1) The ethical interpretation, connotations of the sustainable development and the proposed ethical principles based on the previous studies.(2) An analysis of the ethical basis for the sustainable development of medical services, which combines traditional ethics with ecological ethics.(3) The ethical values of the sustainable development, which support the natural value and the intergenerational value.(4) An analysis of the ethical factors affecting the sustainable development: various problems of healthcare; doctor-patient trust crisis; the fair distribution of medical services and health resources.(5) Some proposals are put forward:to make strategic plans for the sustainable development and boost doctor-patient trust, to establish the guarantee system by way of reasonable allocation of health resources; to develop healthcare culture and cultivate humanistic spirit.
