| Objective10top-ranking universities(totally11, hereinafter referred to as the11universities)in the discipline of public health and preventive medicine were selected from the outcome of the assessment of overall level of the first-level disciplines organized by the Ministry of Education Degree and Graduate Education Development Center in2012.The scientific papers on the discipline of public health and preventive medicine published by this11universities during2008-2012were treated as the object of this study. These scientific articles were analyzed through quantity, quality and impact to reveal the strength, influence and respective superiority and characteristic of this11universities in this discipline, eventually evaluate the academic level of this11universities in this discipline and search their own development priorities to formulate development strategies in line with their targeting to achieve faster and better achievement.MethodThese scientific papers in this discipline published by this11universities during2008-2012were retrieved by universal tactics in Web of Science,CNKI and Wanfang database service platform and analyzed by the basic principles and concepts of bibliometrics as well as mathematical and statistical methods. The unqualified papers were excluded according to the author’s signature unit, the left papers were settled by the first signature unit. The qualified papers were ultimately analyzed through quantity, quality and impact. International papers were analyzed by Endnote Web document management software provided by Thomson Reuters Corporation, and domestic papers were analyzed by Excel2007.Result1873SCI papers on the discipline of public health and preventive medicine were published by this11universities during2008-2012,including939SCI papers published as the first signature unit, with the proportion of50.13%. Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Fudan University, Sun Yat-sen University, China Medical University, Peking University and Nanjing Medical University were the main output of institutions of these papers,741papers were totally published by these six universities, accounting for78.91%, Huazhong University of Science and Technology did maximum contribution by publishing181SCI papers, accounting for19.28%.Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Occupational and Environmental Health and Nutrition and Food Hygiene are the main output areas of these SCI papers published as the first signature unit.4323domestic papers on this discipline were published by this11universities during2008-2012,including2767papers published as the first signature unit, with the proportion of64.01%. Peking University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Fudan University and Sichuan University were the main output of institutions of these papers,1716papers were totally published by these four universities, accounting for62.02%, Peking University did maximum contribution by publishing600domestic papers, accounting for21.68%. Occupational and Environmental Health, Epidemiology and Biostatistics were the main output areas of these domestic papers published as the first signature unit. 939SCI papers on this discipline were published by this11universities as the first signature unit during2008-2012, therein,869SCI papers published on the scientific journals whose Impact Factor were less than5, including599SCI papers published on the scientific journals whose Impact Factor were less than3.The quality of this international papers had a uneven distribution among this11universities and different second-level disciplines.2767domestic papers on this discipline were published by this11universities as the first signature unit during2008-2012, including2082papers published on the Chinese core journals as the first signature unit, accounting for75.24%. The numbers of this papers in the five years showed a steady trend, reaching the highest number of442in2009, accounting for78.93%. The quality of this domestic papers had a uneven distribution among this11universities and different second-level disciplines.These939SCI papers on this discipline published by11universities as the first signature unit during2008-2012had been cited for6706times, therein,814SCI papers had been cited, with the ratio of citation86.69%, and each of this939SCI papers were cited7.14times for average. The academic influence of international papers had a uneven distribution among these11universities and different second-level disciplines.These2767domestic papers on this discipline published by11universities as the first signature unit during2008-2012had been cited for6252times, and each of these papers were cited for2.26times for average. The academic influence of domestic papers had also a uneven distribution among these11universities and different second-level disciplines.ConclusionThe scientific research activities in the discipline of public health and preventive medicine of this11universities were active during2008-2012, The quantities of international papers and the ones published as the first signature unit showed steady growth trend, and the number of high-level academic papers showed significant growth. The number of domestic papers showed slowdown, several universities even showed negative growth. The number of the international and domestic papers showed uneven distribution on the different universities and second-level disciplines.The quality of the international and domestic papers upgraded self-evidently during2008-2012,however,The quality of the vast majority of scientific papers were still relatively low, the high-quality papers especially published on the world-renowned scientific journals still should be further improved. The academic influence of the international and domestic papers showed uneven distribution on the different universities and second-level disciplines.To help further enhancing the level of scientific research and the academic influence of this discipline, following recommendations were made:1It is sensible for these universities to respectively recognize the disciplinary development status in order to constantly adjust and improve the development strategy, actively expand research activities in the field, and enhance the academic level to a higher level.2It is advisable to develop science and technology development planning so as to continuously improve the support of policy, actively absorb and integrate technological resources, optimize resource allocation, and promote sustainable development of this discipline. 3It is critical to treat the national key disciplines as a leader in the construction of this discipline to improve the level of scientific research platform, actively polish discipline characteristics, and strive to build disciplines of features and advantages to promote the overall level of this discipline continuously to be upgraded.4Talented person of innovation in this discipline should be emphasized owing to its crucial role in the construction of the discipline.5Academic exchange activities and the international collaborative research should be actively carried out so as to enhance scientific research capabilities.6The relationship between the quantity, quality of the scientific papers and scientific activities should be correctly viewed. |
