Objective Salbutamol sulfate is a β2-agonist, effectively inhibit the release of histamine and other anaphylactic substances, as well as widely used for the treatment of bronchial asthma due to the strong bronchodilatory action. Salbutamol stimulate the synthesis of protein in animals, and reduce the fat content of carcass. Salbutamol is used as growth-promoting agents to increase lean production in modern animals culture. In 2002, it was listed as illegal drugs in aquaculture industry and not allowed to add in meat-producing animals. The salbutamol residues in animal organs, muscles and other tissues, is a potential risk to the health of consumers. Therefore, the development of a simple and rapid method for the determination of salbutamol residues is very important. In this work, the biocompatible Fe2O3 nanoparticle was prepared, and used as modifier to construct electrode for the determination of salbutamol sulfate, and this method provided a basis theory for the further study in electrochemical sensors. Methods The association complex was formed by the reaction of salbutamol sulfate with sodium tetraphenylborate, and used as electroactive materials to prepare a coated wire or carbon polyvinyl chloride membrane salbutamol sulfate selective electrode. The Fe2O3 nanoparticle modified carbon paste electrode was prepared, and all of them were used to determine the salbutamol sulfate content in pork. Results The response range of coated wire salbutamol sulfate selective electrode is from 1.0×10-1 to 1.0×10-5 mol/L with a detection limit of 6.5×10-6 mol/L. The standard addition method was established to determine salbutamol sulfate in pork and the recovery was 96.8%~102.6%. The linear response range of the Fe2O3 nanoparticle modified carbon paste electrode was from 1.0×10-1 to 1.0×10-6 mol/L, the detection limit is 8.3×10-7 mol/L. The recovery was 97.3%~102.4% by the determination of salbutamol sulfate in the pork. Conclusions In this paper, a coated wire polyvinyl chloride membrane salbutamol sulfate selective electrode and Fe2O3 nanoparticle modified carbon paste electrode with good selectivity and stability, short response time, and low cost were prepared. These sensors can accurately determine the salbutamol sulfate in real samples, this method provided a new electrochemical method for the detection of other β-agonists.Key words salbutamol sulfate; tetraphenylborate sodium; Fe2O3 nanoparticle; modified electrode; carbon paste electrode...
