ObjectiveWe used Atractylodes macrocephala granules to adjust spleen and stomach’s function, according to the characteristics of neonatal spleen and stomach’s function. The function of the spleen and stomach and growth of 100 normal singleton term appropriate for gestational age infants were observed. Researched the effect and safety of Atractylodes macrocephala granules on the newborn’s spleen and stomach’s function.MethodIn this study, we utilized a method of randomized controlled trials.100 normal singleton term appropriate for gestational age neonates who were born in our hospital (Nanhai Maternity and Child Healthcare Hospital) from May 2014 to October 2014 and stayed with her mother in the hospital baby area for observation were randomly divided into observation group 50 cases and control group 50 cases. Infants of control group fed in accordance with 0-6month-old infant feeding guidance guide from "Chinese Dietary Guidelines". Infants of observation group had taken 1.5g Atractylodes particles (The active ingredient was equivalent to 5g stir-baked RHIZOMA ATRACTYLDIS MACROCEPHALAE in bran)once a day from the first day until the seventh day after birth basing on the former. Compared the function of the spleen and stomach and nutritional status 42 days after birth of two groups. The function of spleen and stomach was assessed from five aspects:(1)Meconium, including the start time for defecating and the time required to drain meconium. (2)Morbidity, including neonatal jaundice, respiratory infection and infection of digestive canal. (3)Hospitalizations of children with jaundice. (4) nutritional status 42 days after birth, including weight, length, head circumference, arm circumference, subcutaneous fat thickness (abdomen). (5)Nutrition deviations 42 days after birth, low weight, growth retardation, weight loss or obesity were assessed by Z score method. So that the affect of Baizhu particles on the newborn’s spleen and stomach function was observed and the safety of taking was assessed.Result1. Meconium:Start time for defaction of observation group was earlier than the control group(5.50±1.84h after birth vs 6.85+2.30h after birth). The time required to drain meconium was shorter than the control group (3.10 ±0.97d vs 3.78±1.20d)2. Morbidity:the incidence of jaundice of Observation group(12%) was lower than the control group (30%), the difference was statistically significant (P<0.05). Digestive and respiratory tract infection incidence was no significant difference between two groups.3. Hospitalizations of children with jaundice:no difference was found in total serum bilirubin levels (P> 0.05) of whom admitted to hospital for jaundice, but length of stay of children with pathologic jaundice in observation group was shorter than the control group (P<0.05).4. Nutritional status 42 days after birth:Weight of the observation group was heavier than the control group (4.99±0.45kg vs 4.73±0.48kg). Lenth of the observation group was longer than the control group (57.17±1.16cm vs 56.64±1.11cm).Upper arm circumference of the observation group was longer than the control group (13.05±0.64cm vs 12.54±0.71cm). Subcutaneous fat thickness of the observation group was thicker than the control group (6.99 ±1.09mm vs 6.51±1.03mm).Four comparative differences above were statistically significant. While there were no difference between two groups on head and chest circumference.5. Nutrition deviations 42 days after birth:the difference of number of low birth weight, growth retardation, weight loss or obesity was not statistically significant.6. Safety:Pre-trial prompted us that Osmotic pressure of the liquid was 245~247m0sm ·L-1 when Atractylodes particles 1.5g was mixed with andl5ml warm water, which was lower than osmotic pressure of plasma. No adverse reactions occurred during the observation.ConclusionBaizhu granule could speed up the passage of meconium, and reduce the incidence of pathologic jaundice, shorten the time of hospitalization in children with pathological jaundice, improve the nutrition status of neonates and strengthen the function of the spleen and stomach in newborn while does not increase the number of cases of nutritional deviations like obesity.In this study, the medication method is safe and effective.
