Thiol odor compounds in water are generated not only by the decomposition of dead algae, but by the anaerobic decomposition of protein in wastewater. Massive production and domestic sewage is discharged into the source water, which leads to the frequent occurrence of drinking water odor events. Water containing odor compounds can not be normally used, it can also make residents panic because of sensual stimulation. How to remove thiol odor compounds in drinking water quickly and efficiently has become a research hotspot. This paper focused on the research of methyl mercaptan, a typical odor compound, concerning with the work in two aspects. One is to establish methods for the pretreatment and analysis of methyl mercaptan with solid phase micro-extraction (SPME) and GC-MS. The other is to carry out methyl mercaptan removal experiment in water based on the advanced oxidation technology (AOT) with hydroxyl radicals (·OH) produced by strong ionization discharge and gas-liquid mixing of hydraulic cavitation jet. In order to provide a new idea and method for the treatment of such pollutants in water, we studied the dosage effect and time effect of ·OH as a remover of methyl mercaptan in detail, also we compared the effects of ·OH with other oxidants such as KMnO4, NaCIO and H2O2 in the methyl mercaptan removal process experiment. The experimental results indicate the established analysis method of methyl mercaptan has a high degree of stability, reproducibility and credibility with a sound standard calibration curve and detection limit of 1 ng/L. It is obvious that the needed amount of ·OH may increase as the concentration of methyl mercaptan in water increases. Using concentrations of total residual oxidants (TRO) 1.92 mg/L,2.43 mg/L, 3.85 mg/L to treat methyl mercaptan with concentrations of 20μg/L,50μg/L,100μg/L correspondingly, after one second react, the methyl mercaptan removal rate can be 100%. Compared with KMnO4, NaClO and H2O2,·OH is the most effective remover of methyl mercaptan because of its high ratio of reaction, high degree of oxidbillity and being environmental friendly. As hydroxyl radicals (·OH) generated by the essential technologies of strong ionization discharge and hydraulic cavitation jet are able to effectively remove mercaptan sulfur ether odor compounds in water, it has become a new promising method to treat such kinds of contaminated waters in the future.
