Background and aims: Atrial fibrillation(AF) contributesincrementally to health care utilization and costs, and detrimentally tosurvival and quality of life in older adults. The prevalence research of AFstarted late in our country. The data in the elderly in China remain inscarcity. The aim of this study is to investigate the prevalence of AF in theelderly in the small town in the suburb in south of China. Methods: Data of10158subjects aged60years or more (47.1%weremen and52.9%were women) were collected from Liantang Town ofShanghai in China. The sample was constructed by clustering samplingmethod. We collected information through questionnaires, medicalexamination, electrocardiogram and blood biochemical analysis. The olderpersons are grouped by age and gender. We used multivariate logisticregression analysis to discuss the related risk factors of atrial fibrillation, such as age, gender and hypertension. Results: The prevalence rate of AF increased as both male andfemale subjects aged, and it was0.9%for men but only0.5%for womenaged60years or more, the AF prevalence of men was higher than that ofwomen (p<0.01), related risk factors are age, gender, and hypertension. Conclusions: Prevalence of AF in Shanghai is lower than previousresearch in China. Male sex and hypertension are associated with thepresence of AF. AF is thus a significant public health problem, and we should pay more attention on it.
