Objective: Atrial fibrillation(AF)is one of the most common cardiac arrhythmia. But there are few reports on epidemiologic data in old Chinese population. To investigate the prevalence, risk factors and treatment of AF,we did this survey in 5 community public senior welfare units. Methods: Community seniors in five public welfare pension institutions located in Tianjin City were enrolled in the survey.Basic demographics, personal history, medical history, physical examination,12-lead electrocardiogram(ECG),with or without 24-hour Holter monitoring were determined. Results: A total of 715 subjects(mean age: 80.56±7.90 years, range from 60 to 112 years),319 males and 396 females, were included. The prevalence of AF was 9.51%(n =68),which did not have difference between males(8.78%,n=28)and females(10.10%,n=40)(P=0.5487).The most prevalent comorbidities,in descending order, were hypertension, coronary heart disease(CHD),stroke, hyperlipidemia and diabetes mellitus(DM).The mean CHA2DS2-VASc score was 4.3 ± 1.4 in 68 AF patients. But there were only 1 patient received appropriate anticoagulation therapy with warfarin,4 received dual antiplatelet therapy(aspirin and clopidogrel),and 9 single antiplatelet therapy(aspirin or clopidogrel),and 54 no any antiplatelet or anticoagulant medication in 68 AF subjects. Conclusion: AF is a prevalence of 9.51% in the elderly civic Chinese in Tianjin City. However, these older patients with AF are not treated appropriately with low awareness and anticoagulation therapy.Further health promotion and education efforts are needed to improve awareness and management on AF.
