Objectives The objective of this study was to examine whether pu-erh tea, black tea andgreen tea have influence on bone mineral density, bone microstructure, urinary excretion ofcalcium(Ca), phosphate(P), creatinine(Cr) of osteoporosis model rats, discussing themechanism of tea treating Postmenopausal osteoporosis to provide scientific basis forusing tea treating Postmenopausal osteoporosis.Methods110female rats were randomly assigned to11groups [sham-operated group(Sham); bilaterally ovariectomized group (Model); model+low dose of pu-erh tea(PL);model+middle dose of pu-erh tea(PM); model+high dose of pu-erh tea(PH); model+lowdose of black tea(BL); model+middle dose of black tea(BM); model+high dose of blacktea(BH); model+low dose of green tea(GL); model+middle dose of green tea(GM);model+high dose of green tea(GH). Bilateral ovariectomies were performed in all groupsexcept group SHAM and rats in group SHAM were subjected to sham-operation. Afterseven days of recovery from surgical convalescence, animals were treated orally withdifferent doses of tea for90days except group SHAM and group Model.Results1Body weight of rats subjected to ovariectomy operation increases rapidly andthe body weight of model rats rised statistically significantly compared with shamrats(P<0.001).to some extent, all doses of tea could inhibit the rapid growth of rats bodyweight. At the end of the study, the model group had a significantly higher body weight, while the SHAM group had a significantly lower body weight. The body weight ofgroups PM, PH, BH, GM, GH reduced statistically significantly compared with themodel rats(P<0.05).2At the end of the study, rats subjected to ovariectomy operationhad atrophy uterus. Compared with the model rats, rats of group PM, PH, PM, PH, GHhave slight increase of uterus.3The abdominal fat mass were significant higher in modelgroup when compared with rats in the sham group. However middle or high dose of pu-erh tea, black tea and green tea supplementation could significantly reduce abdominal fatmass.4The bone mineral density (BMD) of model rats reduced statistically significantlycompared with the SHAM rats, while the BMD of groups PM and BM rised statisticallysignificantly compared with the Model rats.5The BV/TV, Tb.Th, Tb.N, BS/BV, Tb.Spand TPF of model rats changed statistically significantly compared with the SHAM rats, while supplementation of appropriate tea could recover these parameters.6Rats in themodel group had significantly higher urinary excretion of calcium(Ca), phosphate(P),creatinine(Cr) than rats in other group.7The model group also had significantly higherserum alkaline phosphatase(ALP) activity than rats in the other groups. significantrecovery of the ALP activity was observed in animals receiving pu-erh tea and black tea. Conclusions1Atrophy uterus and the serious destruction of bone microstructuresuggest that the rats in this study are successful osteoporosis model.2Appropriate teamay be effective in preventing bone loss due to ovarian hormone deficiency.3the data ofblack tea groups has smaller standard deviation, suggesting appropriate black tea canmore stably mitigate bone loss and improve bone microarchitecture in ovariectomizedrats.
