Objective To study the effect of deep brain stimulation(DBS)in bilateralnucleus accumbens(Nacc) forpatients with anorexia nervosawhose course ofdisease was shorter than3years and validate ANrelated pattern(ANRP)networkas a measure of AN by-FDG PET imaging.Methods22patients with anorexia nervosa and22healthy controls matchedby age and gender were recruited in studies of resting-state brain-FDG PETimaging. Four of them underwent DBS of bilateral Nacc. The body mass index(BMI)and other psychiatrist-rated scales such as Yale-Brown-Cornell EatingDisorder Scale(YBC-EDS)were performed as a double-blind clinical assessmentbefore and after surgery by psychiatrists About3months after the surgery,the4AN patients took another-FDG PET scan to assess the change in brainglucose metabolism. Results: Compared with preoperative baseline condition their BMI scoreeating behavior OCD anxiety depression symptoms weregraduallyimprovedduring the stimulation for3months Additionally some anorexiarelated traits were also changed The menstrual of all these patientsrecovered after stimulation of3-12months There was no severe side effectand complication in these patients ANRP was characterized by relativemetabolic increases in bilateralfrontal lobe the limbic lobe lentiformnucleus, left insula, and left subcallosalgyrusand was associated withhypometabolism in bilateral parietal lobe The value of ANRP expressionin AN group was significantly higher than that of healthy controls The valueof ANRP expression also correlated significantly with YBC-EDS score. Conclusions NAcc stimulation is effective and safe for the treatment ofanorexia nervosa and probably a promising cure for anorexia The ANRP basedon-FDG PET imaging call be useful for identification of PD patients fromhealthy controls and correlates well with the severity of the disease...
