Objective:To monitor the changes in the chemical composition of Ziziphora clinopodioides Lam. throughout nine different growth stages and aim at the phytochemical characterisation of Ziziphora clinopodioides Lam. from18populations in XinJiang of China. Methods:The volatile components such as essential oils were analyzed using gas chromatography (GC) and GC-mass spectrometry, the contents of the total phenolics (TPC), flavonoids (TFC), triterpenoids (TTC), free amino acids (TFAAC) and polysaccharide(TPSC) were measured by visible spectrophotometry. and the contents of Caffeic acid, Rosemary acid, Diosmin, Linarin and Pulegone were detected by HPLC. Then the principal component analysis(PCA) method and cluster analysis(CA) method were used to analyze genetic diversity of major chemical composition of Ziziphora clinopodioides Lam. germplasm resources from XinJiang province. Results:To the different growth stages, the yield of the essential oils range1.1%to1.9%, and they included pulegone, which was the most abundant component (77.48%to87.3%), the contents of the p-menthanone, trans-isopulegone, d-limonene and eucarvone are less than pulegone but more than others. The contents of non-volatile components, such as that of total phenolics (TPC), flavonoids (TFC), triterpenoids (TTC), and free amino acids (TFAAC) were different in each stages. But all of the components above were higher in pre-flowering stage and flowering stage. To the different areas, the yield of the essential oils range0.8%to2.0%, and the contents of all components were different. According to the research,6principle components were extracted from the essential oils through PCA and the cumulative contribution rate reached85.196%. By the CA. Both the oils and ten specific compositions of18samples can be classified into3clusters and the classification results are broadly consistent with the regions. Conclusion:Determined the flowering period is the optimum harvesting time for Ziziphora clinopodioides Lam. initially. And the results of this research can provide a reliable basis for resources distribution and quality evaluation of Z. clinopodioides Lam.
