Objective:to study the laws of medication of the ancient physicians treating dysmenorrhea, and analyze their characteristics. Methods:a total of480drug prescriptions have been selected of clinical prescriptions and the non-clinical prescriptions rescpetively by ancient physicians treating dysmenorrhea, metrology methods have been used to calculate the indexof the number of herbs used, the scopes,the four natures and five flavors of drugs, the tropism, the functions and frequencies,and further more, the index of the overclapping uses of drugs has been calculated and the cluster analysis has been conducted; meanwhile, an in-depth analysis has been made on the applications of analgesics used by doctors in Qing Dynasty treating dysmenorrhea. Results:1. In all the past dynasties,in the treatment of dysmenorrhea among all high-frequency medicines applied angelica has ranked No.1, before the song dynasty rheum, leech, cinnamon, dried ginger enjoying higher frequencies;since Song Dynasty to Qing Dynasty the frequency of using rhizoma corydalis, radix aucklandiae and rhizoma zedoariae, being higher. In Qing Dynasty,among all the high-frequency herbs used in mdecal practice, there was no Prepared Radix Rehmanniae; however, it was very frequently used in medication essays.2. Before the Song Dynasty,cold-natured medicine was used in treating dysmenorrhea while after Song Dynasty, warm-nautred medicine was more frequently used than the cold-natured ones; however, in all periods the flavors were mainly bitter,spicy and sweet; and the tropism were mainly in liver, in spleen and in heart. Tonics took a tiny proportion before Song Dynasy while after that the use of tonics was growing with blood tonic as leading role.3. the index of the overclapping uses of drugs has been calculated and the cluster analysis has been conducted to find out some commonly used medicine patterns and combinations such as the root of herbaceous peony and cultivated land, Cinnamon and rhizoma zedoariae, Rhizoma corydalis, angelica andfragrant, Siwu Decoctio and so on.4. In the clinical practice in Qing Dynasty common painkillers were angelica,incense andyanhusuo, etc. They were mainly the warm-natured medicine, flavored mainly bitter, spicy and sweet, and the tropism is maily in liver, in spleen and in heart. The pain-killers’ functions were mainly for promoting the circulation of qi and blood. Conclusion:Befor Song Dyansty doctors tended to use more medicine for promoting blood circulation and relieving cold while from Song to Qing Dynasty they were more inclined to use pain-killers; in the medical books in Ming and Qing Dynasties Siwu Decoctio was frequently used, however in the actual clinical practice Prepared Radix Rehmanniae was very rarely used and medicine for promoting qi and blood circulations and killing pains was more frequently used. How the ancient physicians used the medicine and the laws of using them while treating dysmenorrheal can provide important criterion to today’s clinical medications.
