Objective:A descriptive research method was used,to assess the current status of nurses’ core competency and self career planning in the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South Universty,to investigate the correlation between the core competency development and career planning, In order to provide reference for the hospital to make further traning scheme and nursing human resource management.Method:A stratified random sampling method was used, and a questionnaire survey was conducted on the637in-service nurses of the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University. The research tools included:general data for nurses,Competency Inventory for Registered Nurse(CIRN), the self-made questionnaire regarding nurse’ career planning. Statistical method includes:the mean±standard deviation, t-test.analysis of variance, pearson correlation analysis, multiple linear regression analysis.Results:1. The overall score of nurses’ core competency:The core competency level of nurses was reported. The overall score is 2.73±0.56,which is in the medium level. Legal/ethical practice, leadership ability score ranked the top2, and interpersonal relationship, clinical care ability, teaching/coaching ability, research/critical thinking, professional development dimensions row last2.2. The distribution characteristics of core competency score: From the vi ew of age, the core competency of bel ow-30-years age group is the lowest in research/critical thinking, interpersonal relationship, clinical care, teaching/coaching, leadership, legal/ethical practice teaching/coaching dimension (P<0.05). There has no significant difference (P>0.05) between the remaining two groups.For the professional development dimension, There has no significant difference (P>0.05) among the groups. From the view of working experience, the core competency level of nurses whose working experience within5years is the lowest in clinical care, interpersonal relationship, teaching/coaching, research/critical thinking, and leadership dimension (P<0.05). With the increase in working experience, the overall score is on the rise, the score of nurses whose working experience within10years is less than above-10-years group, but for the legal/ethical practice, professional development dimension, There has no significant difference (P>0.05) between all the groups. From the view of job title, general nurse group scores the lowest in clinical care, leadership, teaching/coaching dimension, there has no significant difference (P>0.05) among the head nurse, unit teaching supervisor and unit nursing team leader group. From the view of professional titles, nurses who have the nurse-in-charge title score the highest in research/critical thinking, clinical care, interpersonal relationship, leadership, and teaching/coaching dimension. From the view of marital status, married nerses score higher than unmarried nurses in all dimensions except professional development dimension, there is no significant difference (P>0.05) between married and divorced group. From the view of academic background, nurses with College degree or diploma score lower than nurses with Bachelor degree or above in teaching/coaching dimension, there is no significant difference between these two groups i n the rest di mensi on. The score of nurses from different departments has no significant difference.3. The status of nursing career planning scores:The average score of nurse career planning is3.61±0.44, the scores order is self-assessment dimension, cognition of occupation, career planning knowledge awareness and action dimension, job satisfaction dimension. The scores for self-assessment dimension of those nurses whose nursing age ranged from16to20years were the highest, but the scores of those whose nursing age <5years ranked last. From the view of professional titles, nurses who have the nurse-in-charge title score the highest in self-assessment dimension,and junior nurses score the lowest. Nurses with Bachelor degree or above score higher than nurses with College degree or diploma in cognition of occupation dimension.4. Correlation between nursing career planning and core competency:Career planning knowledge awareness and action, cognitive dimension of occupation and self assessment dimension of nursing career planning have correlation with nurses core competency and,legal/ethical practice only with the occupation cognition and self assessment dimension has a linear regression relationship, the regression coefficient Beta is0.440, the coefficient of determination R2is0.224; the other6dimensions has respectively a linear regression relationship with career planning knowledge awareness and action, cognitive dimension of occupation and self assessment dimension the regression coefficient Beta between0.377to0.459, the coefficient of determination R2between0.243to0.285.Conclusion:The overall core competency score of nurses in this hospital is in the medium level. Legal/ethical practice ability score the highest, research/critical thinking, professional development ability score the lowest. The overall status of nursing career planning in this hospital is not optimistic, which is in the medium level, and the scores were relatively low especially for the awareness of career planning knowledge and job satisfaction dimension. The study also found that the factors influencing the core competency of nurses are age, working experience, professional titles.The factors influencing nursing career planning are working experience, professional titles, education background. Self-assessment dimension score was positively related to work-ing experience and professional titles. Nurses with Bachelor degree or above score higher than nurses with College degree or diploma in cognition of occupati on dimension.
