A Study On Undergraduate Students Smoking And Its Determinants In Huaihua, Hunan, China

Objective:To understand the current status of smoking triers and smoking, and its determinats in undergraduate students in Huaihua of Hunan province, China.Methods:By used stratified cluster random sampling method, undergraduate students from different grades and different professions in HuaiHua College were divided into30layers (3grades and10professions), with a class (35students per class) as a cluster, then30classes were selected. All the students in these selected classes during the spring of2013were selected as our subjects. Chi-square test and logistic regression analysis were used to explore the influencing factors of smoking triers and smokers.Results:973undergraduate students were collected, tried smoking cases were206and tried smoking rates were21.17%. The tried smoking rates in boys and girls were49.0%and11.3%respectively. Smoking triers are mainly concentrated in the stage of primary and high schools (53.7%), and the subjective reason mainly was curious (47.1%) and annoyed psychology (45.2%). The risk factors of tried smoking were male students (OR=6.730), and parents’attitude towards children smoking without oppose nor management (OR=1.856).66smoker cases and smoking rate was6.78%. The smoking rates of boys and girls were22.0%and1.5%respectively. The risk factors of smoking included Male (OR=15.432), urban student (OR=1.988), possessed pocket money more than500yuan per month (OR=3.628), and parents’attitude towards children smoking without oppose nor management (OR=3.322). Conclusion:Gender, urban students, possessed pocket money more than500yuan per month, and parents’ attitude were the influence factors of smoking triers and smoking behavior. The only child also were easier to try smoking than non only child.
