Objective:To estimate survival time for patients and to understand the determinants of the prognosis for such patients and to provide reliable evidence for clinical assessment and individualized treatment. Methods:The retrospective cohort study was conducted among patients with breast cancer data in Hunan provincal tumor hospital from the year of1992to2005, the clinical characteristics and treatment situation and the survival status were involved in this study. The direct method was used to calculate the survival rate and Kaplan Meier survival curve was to estimate survival time for patient and Log-rank test was performed to compare the survival time difference between the treatment approaches. Cox proportional hazard model was conducted to explore the determinants of prognosis for patients with breast cancer. Results:A total of1761cases of breast cancer data were followed-up,since the date of the clear pathological diagnosis, the survival time for the patients had been from2.3months to18.9years,survival rate of the patients with breast cancer was96.9%at1year,74.7%at5years,54.5%at10years,41.6%at15years,respectively. Univariate analysis showed that lesion, clinical stage, the female progesterone levels,TNM staging, treatment, surgical operation, chemotherapy, and recurrence or not were associated with the survival time of patients with breast cancer. The finding from Cox proportional hazard model showed that clinical stage (RR=1.618,95%CI:1.243,2.106) and menopause (RR=0.466,95%CI:0.221,0.984) were independent determinants for breast cancer prognosis. Conclusion:This research shows that the median survival time for breast cancer patients was11.0years based on the date of the clear pathological diagnosis, and survival rate of the patients with breast cancer was92.1%at1year,69.7%at5years,51.4%at10years,41.2%at15years,respectively.The later stage breast cancer clinical stage shorter survival time for the patients, the longer survival of breast cancer in postmenopausal women.
