ObjectiveThe study on acceptance and influence factors of palliative care in the elderly patients with chronicnon-malignant diseases can provide a theoretical basis for the development of palliative care in China.MethodThe study extracted235elder patients with chronic diseases in the pension institutions andcommunity, adopting the method of Convenience sampling. The survey was carried out with self-designedquestionnaire. Use self-made questionnaire to investigate the respondents’ generally condition, diseaseinformation, quality of life, attitude towards death, cognitive status and acceptance of palliative care with235questionnaires distributed and219effective questionnaires obtained, the effective rate of recovery was93.20%. This survey used the software of Epidata3.0to establish the database and SPSS13.0to analyzethe statistic. The main methods were: descriptive analysis, chi-square test, and nonparametric tests.Result(1)1.4%elder patients with chronic diseases heard of the palliative care services, and53.4%elderpatients with chronic diseases agreed to accept them.(2) The acceptance of palliative care services of the elderly with chronic non-malignant diseasesaffected by age, occupation, education, living situation, marital status and the type of health insurance. Thedifference was statistically significant (P <0.01). (3) The acceptance had connection with the quantity of illness, experience in hospital and quality oflife. The difference was statistically significant (P <0.01). At the same, the attitude toward death is a majorfactor affecting the acceptance of palliative care of the elderly with chronic non-malignant diseases.(4) Among palliative care service providing for the elderly with chronic non-malignant diseases, thefirst three are controlling and reducing the symptoms of physical discomfort and pain management; theservice providing for patients and their family are psychological counseling, reducing their negativeemotion of depression and anxiety.Conclusion(1) The awareness rate of palliative care in the elder patients with chronic non-malignant diseases waslow.(2) Elders suffering from chronic non-malignant diseases could understand and accept the concept ofpalliative care, and that in high demands for palliative care services. It was affected by age, education, thetype of health insurance, the attitude towards death, ill conditions and the quality of life.
