ObjectiveThis study applies various skills from Williams Life Skills Training (WLST) to cope with thepressure and improve the interpersonal relationship to young nurses, aiming to investigate the effect ofWLST on young nurses’ mental health.MethodsThis study investigates96young female nurses with a seniority over one year (aged from20-35)coming from the emergency department, ICU, pediatrics, operation room, medical ward and surgical wardof First Affiliated Hospital of Henan University. First, this study introduces the research purpose, significance, content and the need to comply with the common principles and sign the informed consent, tothe research object. All participants are randomly divided into intervention group (n=48) and controlgroup (n=48). The general situation of comparison results showed no significant statistical differencebetween the two trial groups (P>0.05), and they matched to each other. Meanwhile, A Eysenek PersonalityQuestionnaire questionnaire (EPQ) was conducted on the two trial groups, and the results showed:introversion and extroversion scores, neuroticism scores, psychoticism scores, hide scores and thecomparison of EPQ scores showed no statistical difference (P>0.05), and EPQ scores of the two groups inthe same baseline. The trials who finally completed the study include48in intervention group and48incontrol group.Nurses in intervention group were divided into4groups, with12people in each group, andwith WLST intervention conducted with group as a unit. But the control group did not take anyintervention. All the trials need to self-rate and complete the following questionnaire: Symptom Check list 90SCL-90, Orientation to Life Questionnaire SOC-13, Trait CoPing Style Questionnaire TCSQ, andNurses Wbrking Stress Questionnaire NWSQ. In order to ensure the effectiveness of the research results, the researcher herself attended WLST training courses set by the Institute of mental health, Xiangya No.2Hospital of Central South University, and obtained the WLST license, and all the investigations werecompleted by the researcher herself.Results1. Before the intervention, the SCL-90scores showed no statistical difference between the interventiongroup and the control group (P>0.05); after the intervention, the scores of the intervention group were asfollows: somatization (1.69±0.36), interpersonal sensitivity (1.46±0.58), depression (2.11±0.67), anxiety(1.53±0.54), hostility (1.10±0.64), paranoia (1.92±0.70), other aspects (2.13±0.84), which were lower thanthose of the control group (its scores were: somatization (2.02±0.62),interpersonal sensitivity(2.34±0.64),depression (2.51±0.98), anxiety(1.92±0.68), hostility(1.89±0.99), paranoia (1.92±0.70), other aspects(2.13±0.84)), thus the two groups had statistical difference (P <0.05); after the intervention, the scoreswere lower than those got before the intervention, which were as following: somatization(2.01±0.7),interpersonal sensitivity (2.22±0.72), depression(2.46±0.82),anxiety(2.07±0.77), hostility(2.15±0.86),paranoia(1.92±0.77), other aspects(2.09±0.66),thus there were statistical difference before and after theintervention (P <0.05); there was no statistical difference in the control group (P<0.05).2. Before the intervention, TCSQ scores indicated no statistical difference(P>0.05) in positive ornegative coping between the intervention group and the control group; after the intervention, the controlgroup scored (31.34±3.37) lower in positive coping than the intervention group (37.53±4.44) did, and itscored (23.14±4.75) higher in negative coping than the intervention group (20.53±5.46) did, thus the twogroups had statistical difference (P <0.05); after the intervention, the positive coping grades of the intervention group (37.53±4.44) were higher than that before the intervention(31.11±5.33),andmeanwhile,the negative grades (20.53±5.46) were lower than those before the intervention(23.44±4.65);thus there were statistical difference before and after the intervention (P <0.05); the statistics in positiveor negative coping of the control group didn’t change after the intervention(P<0.05).3. Before the intervention, the NWSQ scores demonstrated no statistical difference between theintervention group and the control group (P>0.05); after the intervention, the marks of the interventiongroup(73.32±12.45)was lower than those of the control group(85.56±13.21); thus the two groups hadstatistical difference (P <0.05); after the intervention, the grades of the intervention group(73.32±12.45)were lower than those before the intervention(85.55±14.11); thus there were statistical difference beforeand after the intervention (P <0.05); there was no statistical difference in the control group(P<0.05).4. The average score of all the trials’sense of coherence was57.48±10.42, demonstrating that thesense of coherence of young nurses was in the middle level; after intervention, for the interventiongroup, the scores of sense of coherence(62.35±11.51), comprehension (22.37±5.01), coping ormanagement ability (19.60±3.66) and sense of value(16.88±4.17)were all higher than those of thecontrol group, which is sense of coherence(55.38±11.97), comprehension(20.05±4.17), copingor management abilit(y17.16±3.19)and sense of valu(e15.21±3.53); thus the two groups had statisticaldifference (P <0.05); similarly, the scores after intervention were higher, compared to the marks beforethe intervention, which is sense of coherence (56.25±11.11), comprehension (20.21±4.61), coping ormanagement ability (16.80±3.06) and sense of value (15.08±3.67); thus there were statistical differencebefore and after the intervention (P <0.05); there was no statistical difference in the controlgroup(P<0.05). Conclusion1. WLST is effective on improving the level of mental heath of young nurses, via instruc-ting them toobserve, analyze and tackle with the stressful circumstances, adjusting theirphysical and psychologicalreactions to the strains, and enhancing their interpersonal as well as communication skills.2. WLST can improve coping styles of young nurses through a number of skills training to deal withthe stressful situation, and thus it can reduce the working pressure of young nurses.3. WLST can promote the sense of coherence, which will be one of the key ingredients to thehigh-quality medical service.
