Objective: To explore the syndrome element distribution, combination rule, common syndromes and features of cough as well as the medicinal compatibilitylaw adopted by modern famous doctors of Chinese medicine through studying andorganizing the experience of these doctors in the treatment of cough in order toexpand clinical thoughts and improve clinical outcomes. Methods:Literatures which met the inclusion criteria were retrieved from theexisting “Lung Disease Database of Modern Famous Doctors of ChineseMedicine” and “Cough Database of Journals” for the establishment of “LiteratureResearch Database of Experience of Modern Famous Doctors of Chinese Medicinein Treating Cough”. The syndrome distribution, combination rule, features ofsyndrome element distribution of cough as well as the medicinal compatibility lawadopted by modern famous doctors of Chinese medicine in treating cough werestudied by using SPSS17.0statistical software and adopting statistical descriptionand statistical analysis of frequency. Results:Filtered according to the inclusion criteria and exclusion criteria, the dataof3579,1854including etiology, and2179pathogenesis,482syndrome610kindsof Chinese medicine,482prescriptions.1. Establishment of “Literature Research Database of Experience of ModernFamous Doctors of Chinese Medicine in Treating Cough”.2. The pathogenesis ofcough Without declaring lung(25.8%),Accumulation of phlegm and heat in thelung(8.1%),Sputum and dampness pathogen obstructing the lung(8.1%),adverserising of pulmonary qi(5.0%),Yin deficiency of the lung(4.7%)3. Syndromeelement distribution and combination rule: The pathogenic syndrome elements ofcough were mainly composed of heat (25.1%), wind (24.9%), cold (17.6%) andsputum (15.6%). The syndrome element of pathogenic location was mainly thelung. The combination rule was dominated by the combination of three syndromeelements and two syndrome elements. For the combination of syndrome elementsof disease nature and disease location, the common single syndrome elements of disease nature were dryness pathogen, yin deficiency, qi deficiency and heatpathogen. The disease locations were mainly the lung, the spleen and the kidney. The combination of two syndrome elements of disease nature were wind pathogencombined with cold pathogen, the sputum pathogen combined with dampnesspathogen, wind pathogen combined with heat pathogen, the sputum pathogencombined with heat pathogen. The disease location was mainly the lung.4.Syndrome distribution rule: Syndromes which are frequently seen were wind-coldpathogen obstructing the lung syndrome, sputum and dampness pathogenobstructing the lung syndrome, dryness pathogen injuring the lung syndrome,wind-heat pathogen attacking the lung syndrome, yin deficiency of the lungsyndrome, heat accumulation of the lung syndrome, lung-qi deficiencysyndrome, accumulation of phlegm and heat in the lung syndrome.5. Commonsyndromes and characteristics: The common syndromes were wind-cold pathogenobstructing the lung syndrome, sputum and dampness pathogen obstructing thelung syndrome, dryness pathogen injuring the lung syndrome, wind-heat pathogenattacking the lung syndrome, yin deficiency of the lung syndrome, heataccumulation of the lung syndrome, lung-qi deficiency syndrome, accumulation ofphlegm and heat in the lung syndrome, The primary and secondary commonsymptoms of cough were analyzed by combining statistical results.5.1Wind-cold pathogen obstructing the lung syndromeThe primary symptoms: cough, white sputum, thin and clear sputum, floatingpulse, tight pulse; The secondary symptoms: aversion to cold, runny nose andheadache.5.2Sputum and dampness pathogen obstructing the lung syndromeThe primary symptoms: cough, excessive sputum, sputum with white color, greasy fur and sticky sputum; The secondary symptoms: fatigue, chest tightness, phlegm which is easy to spit, thirst with no desire to drink and loss of appetite.5.3Dryness pathogen injuring the lung syndromeThe primary symptoms: cough, little sputum, thin fur, thirst, sticky sputumand rapid pulse; The secondary symptoms: irritability, yellow fur, difficulty incoughing up sputum, floating pulse,.5.4Wind-heat pathogen attacking the lung syndromeThe primary symptoms: cough, sore throat, yellow sputum, red tongue, floating pulse. The secondary symptoms: itchy throat, dry mouth, turbid nasal discharge5.5Yin deficiency of the lung syndromeThe primary symptoms: cough, dry mouth, dry throat, thin pulse, dry tongue; The secondary symptoms: little fur, dysphoria with feverish sensation in chest, palms and soles and listlessness.5.6Heat accumulation of the lung syndromeThe primary symptoms: cough, thirst, sore throat, itchy throat, yellow fur andrapid pulse; The secondary symptoms: little sputum, red tongue5.7Lung-qi deficiency syndromeThe primary symptoms: cough, fatigue, pale complexion, weak qi, weakpulse. The secondary symptoms: white fur, spontaneous sweating, pale tongue, white sputum.5.8Accumulation of phlegm and heat in the lung syndromeThe primary symptoms: cough, excessive and sticky sputum, greasy fur, thirstwith desire to drink, slippery pulse. The secondary symptoms: yellow fur, headache, gasp, dry mouth and hypochondriac pain.5.9Liver-fire invading the lung syndromeThe primary symptom: cough, dry throat, bitter mouth, pulse string, beagitated, pain, chest tightness. Time: headache, tongue dry, moss yellow.5.10Yang deficiency syndromeThe primary symptoms: cough, aversion to cold, weak qi, hypologia, clearand thin sputum, white fur, palpitation, pale complexion, deep pulse and fatigue; The secondary symptoms: stretching, slippery pulse, edema, dark complexion, lesssputum, abdominal fullness and desire for hot drinks.6. The cough of pharmaceutical analysis Single drug use frequency is higher(48.1%), followed by almond of liquorice (43.9%), pinellia (27.1%), poria cocos(25.0%), platycodon grandiflorum (24.2%), fritillary (23.9%), dried tangerine ororange peel (21.5%), phlegm (21.4%) and radix scutellariae (17.9%), loquat leaf(17.8%), dwarf lilyturf (17.7%), straight ladybell (17.5%), ginger (16.8%),ephedra (16.8%), white mulberry root-bark (16.7%), unibract fritillary bulb(15.7%), zhejiang fritillary (15.6%). 7.To justify clinical compatibility7.1Frequently used prescription for common syndromes7.1.1Wind-cold pathogen obstructing the lung syndrome: Xinsu powder, Zhisoupowder, Sanao decoction. For the main syndrome elements of cough, the element of disease locationis mainly the lung while elements of disease nature are mainly heat pathogen, windpathogen, cold pathogen and sputum pathogen.2. The syndrome element combination of cough is mainly the combination ofthree elements, and the combination with the highest frequency is wind pathogen, cold pathogen and the lung.3. The common syndromes for cough are wind-cold pathogen obstructing thelung syndrome, sputum and dampness pathogen obstructing the lung syndrome, dryness pathogen injuring the lung syndrome, wind-heat pathogen attacking thelung syndrome, yin deficiency of the lung syndrome, heat accumulation of thelung syndrome, accumulation of phlegm and heat in the lung syndrome, lung-qideficiency syndrome.4. The medicines which can be used in various syndromes are Chenpi,Xingren, Maidong, Gancao, Baibu, Jiegeng, Kuangdonghua, Qianhu, Sangbaipiand Ziwan etc.
